What's in a wink

Halloween Town, Belfast

I feel it should be obvious, but maybe a wink means different things to different people on here?

To us it is like shorthand for "Hi, we looked at your profile and world's love to chat more and see if we get on." If anyone winks at us we typically read it as similar and respond if we're also interested.

So often though, people will wink at us, and when we message they just leave it on read? Do they mean something very different by winking?

To me its a 'I've seen your profile and I like it, have a look at mine if you are interested'.

As you say, I'm sure it means different things to different people.

If someone returns my wink, I'd send a message afterwards.

For me it’s a “nice profile, let me know if you want to chat”

I love winking at as many profiles as possible and enjoy getting winks from ladies as often as possible.

Until now though, I thought it was spelled with an a instead of an i

That's how I would interpret it. A bit like swiping on a dating app, I would see it as a means of consenting to receiving a message.

Obviously, people are free to send messages to whomever hasn't filtered them, but a wink is like an invitation to engage.

Unless it's not like that at all and has a totally secret meaning that I'm not aware of. Come to think if it, I have been seeing a lot of threads lately suggesting that there is some kind of secret clique on here. Maybe it's something to do with that?

I don't bother with a wink as most profiles say don't bother that they usually want more.

Closer than you think

"For me it’s a “nice profile, let me know if you want to chat”"

Exactly this description for me too.

I have reciprocated a few winks and followed up with a message and got nothing back which can be boggling but I'm here long enough to not read anything into those.

"I don't bother with a wink as most profiles say don't bother that they usually want more."

I see winks as a means for women to let a guy know that they are open to chatting. Not that a guy must wait for a wink to send a message, rather if a wink is received then the winker is open to chatting. Of course, this is not always how it actually pans out.

I don't think there's much use in a guy sending a wink.

Exactly. I'm happy to receive a wink but don't see much point in sending them.

It's often used as a way of telling someone they've just been blocked.

Don't understand the thinking behind it but I've seen it discussed in the lounge.

Yes a wink is just letting people know that you liked their profile.

I've sent many winks then didn't follow up with messaging back:

At second glance the profile wasn't that appealing

Message received didn't match their profile

Here and there

I stopped looking at winks because even when I was interested in the winking profile and expressed that either by wink (rare) or message (usually as I've plenty to say ), more often than not, there'd be no follow up from the winker.

I've often had the feeling it's for collecting fabs on photos, which is very rarely something I do.
