The pace of life and the freedom is immence x"
Ooooo I was hoping that’s what you’d say! I’m becoming more and more disillusioned with England tbh and with my job entirely remote I can live anywhere |

"Anyone done it?
As Nike say “just do it”
Just gotta work out the logistics "
Also if you're working remotely check for broadband when you want to live
Dublin rents are absolutely crazy so don't waste your money on that |

Move to Northern Ireland. Yes, it has its own quirks, but rent is manageable and you get to enjoy the whole Ireland as it is one island after all.
I moved here 14 years ago and haven't regretted my desicion not for a second |

Oh and it requites way less paperwork for relocation as it is part of UK |

All depends on what it is about Ireland/Irish lifestyle that appeals to you.
I've made a move from Ireland to the UK and then from the UK to Ireland and can safely say Im much happier after the 2nd one |

I’m basically looking for somewhere with nicer people really. And a change. Now that I’m single and my kids are adults it makes sense to move! |

Good idea
We'd be deira an excira to have you.
Now make sure that you watch The Quiet Man, The Snapper, The Van and The Commitments, just so you have a cultural introduction. It's not what we're like now but it's kinda where we come from and will help with our humour.
Ah sure throw Darby O'Gill and the Little People into the movie watching, just in case you end up in Kerry |

Moving doesn’t always solve everything for everyone. I’d stay clear of Dublin, mostly because I’d need two full-time jobs to live there. Take your time, have a think about why you’re moving and what you want, tough decision to leave family and friends. |

Lived in England for 11 years.
Enjoyed it but nothing beats home. And so many English friends who have visited over the years and fell in love with Ireland.

I would steer clear of Dublin because of rent prices.
Cork, Galway, wexford Waterford.
If you drive a car the price of insurance and tax and buying a car might be a shock compared to England. |

I'd second this, also, as someone who moved back from the UK after 12 years there, Ireland is expensive, unless you're on a low income you have to pay for GP visits and prescriptions, the state health service is pretty abysmal in terms of waiting times, public transport services are well below those of the UK so if you live rurally, expect to be car dependent. Rent, food, utilities all cost more than you are used to.
The Irish may seem open and friendly on the surface, but it can be quite difficult to integrate into small, cliquey communities, if you're alone you will have no support network. The country also has social issues just like everywhere else.
Yes, it can be a great move for some, but it's not without it's pitfalls. Think about it carefully and don't close the door behind you leaving the UK |

"So I think my first job should be booking a holiday to Ireland "
Might be easier for you to move to Northern Ireland, you wouldn’t have to re-register your car (if you have one) and you wouldn’t have to pay for any medical bills. Your tax and national insurance is meant to take care of that!!! |

NI would be easier but my preference is Republic of Ireland! But given my job is England based moving to Ireland might prove problematic with the tax situation - a problem I wouldn’t have with Northern Ireland |

"So looks like Belfast might be a good option "
You’d definitely need a new tax code if you decide to move to the Republic and could possibly end up paying a high tax rate. Since we’re all going to end up paying a higher tax rate in the North by 2023 due to Covid might not be much of a problem. Let’s face it the government will want the billions they’ve paid out due to COVID back.
Certainly check out Belfast, high rent rates there also. Not really sure if it would be much of a change for you though, then again I’m not sure what you’re actually looking for or what life is like for you at the moment. You’ll have too enlighten me somewhat. Never lived in England myself, no clue what it’s like. |

You’re just going to have to take the plunge and come over, take a look around and make up your own mind. Might be easier for you if you’d a few distant relatives living here. Something for you to check out and discuss with your family to find out.
Not always a great situation to be living on your own, especially somewhere new too you. I know, this is also part of the adventure. Let’s just say as much as the craic is 90 over here we won’t all welcome you with open arms. Just stating the facts of life in this message. Not meant too be off putting for you. |

Check out Jordanstown, Hollywood, Millisle. Same prices as city centre but much better quality of life |

It’s important to get an honest reflection so I appreciate it! I’m not at all scared of being in a new place solo, I’ve done it many times. Luckily if I dislike it I can always move I’m a bit of a nomad! |

Many of my coworkers are from Eastern Europe and have moved here from England because the rent is cheaper, but they have said the wages aren’t the same here as in certain parts of England (we don’t get paid as well).
Wages and rent reflect the area you live in, just my opinion. What I mean is if you decided to leave your current job and look for a new one over here you might struggle to get the same money. |

Propertypal would be a good site from you to check out when it comes to both houses for sale and rental property throughout Northern Ireland. Indeed, Nijobs, Nijobfinder and job centre online, would also be useful sites. They’d give you a true reflection of the rent you’d be expected to pay and the wages to expect in certain areas.
Good place for you to start, hopefully there’s some useful advice in there somewhere. Good luck. |

"I’d deffo air cnb for a good month first before jumping in. NI is quite small so if you were here for a month you would easily drive about and get a good feel for it. If relocating you shoul seriously consider transport links/ hospitals and social activities that suit you. Also your local environment if you’re ‘outdoorsy’.Don’t rule out South of Belfast even towards Newry. Halfway to Dublin for nights out and day trips if you enjoy city life, close to 2 airports. Donegal is nice if you never want to swing again "
To be fair there's busses going from Belfast City centre to Dublin City centre and back every hour 24/7.
Northern Ireland is small, yes, buy its all the same island and travelling across it isn't a big issue.
You can just jump into your car and go wherever you please. Trains and busses are widely available too.
From a swinger point of view I would steer clear from smaller towns like newry as most of them have small town mentality and god forbid you're more adventurous than locals (been there done that, it's shit).

You're a man. It's very very different for a woman to be the talk of the town where everyone knows everyone.
In bigger cities people are more relaxed and genuinely care less about what you're at |

Also your local environment if you’re ‘outdoorsy’.Don’t rule out South of Belfast even towards Newry. Halfway to Dublin for nights out and day trips if you enjoy city life, close to 2 airports. Donegal is nice if you never want to swing again
I’m disappointed you think of Newry like that. After all I live just outside it and we’re blessed because we’re 40 mins from Belfast and 45 mins from Dublin and the best thing is.
I live here
I lived in newry for almost 10 years. Its not a great place if you're a woman who doesn't fit the small town mentality standard.
Wouldn't go back to it even if you paid me...
People in Warrenpoint are still actually talking about this one swingers party that took place in warrenpoint Castle about 6 years ago (I don't think there even was one, but rumours spread like wildfire).
Oh and the bus from Belfast Belfast Dublin is actually cheaper than one from Newry too
All small towns are like that.. Keep your business private and they've nothing to talk about..
Given my race, I find big cities a better option! They tend to be more diverse! "
Ireland is very multicultural now especially the large towns and cities.. Its not like 30 years ago where it was almost exclusively Irish.. Where I live there are many Africans and east Europeans and everybody gets on with life.. I'd steer clear of northern Ireland and I'll probably be roasted for this but imo it's still quite a bigoted place.. Perhaps it's a hangover of the troubles who knows.. |

"So I’ve been looking at Bangor? Always wanted to live near the sea and it’s close to Belfast! Definitely planning a trip to both "
Helen's bay is lovely. Bangor itself is nice and very close to Belfast.
Lovehoney sends more items to Bangor than any other town. |

"All depends on what it is about Ireland/Irish lifestyle that appeals to you.
I've made a move from Ireland to the UK and then from the UK to Ireland and can safely say Im much happier after the 2nd one
I’m basically looking for somewhere with nicer people really. And a change. Now that I’m single and my kids are adults it makes sense to move! "
Come to Kildare the best county in Ireland by a mile! And only 60km from Dublin.
Or Wicklow... it's so beautiful. If I could live anywhere other than Kildare it would be Wicklow |

"So I think my first job should be booking a holiday to Ireland "
Definitely! I'd recommend the west coast, anywhere from Cork to Donegal is absolutely beautiful.
When my kids were small we moved to Mountshannon, a small village in Co Clare right on Lough Derg with a diverse community of blowins from all over Europe, and locals, and although we moved back eventually for work and education purposes it was five years they'll never forget.
A lot depends on what you bring to the party. If you're naturally a friendly, chatty and helpful person you'll do fine. I play music and felt accepted instantly, got invited to the neighbours' NYE kneesup and had an absolute blast and regular weekly sessions the whole rest of the time.
What a poster said above about health services and public transport is true, it's inevitable that a sizeable country with a population less than that of greater London is going to struggle with funding public services due to low tax take. You're fucked without a car.
Oh and the weather. It can be breathtakingly beautiful between the rain, but you do need to embrace the rain |

Awesome move! Takes alot of guts to do that. NI just starting to open up properly post covid as well and full of friendly people and lots to do and see. You can travel all over Ireland no matter where you are based. Dublin is 2 hours from Belfast, Galway 3 so you can get about and explore the island once you get settled too ! |

Good luck with the move.. I moved from London to Dublin 5 years ago... and found dublin to be hard work meeting people other than expats(from UK, Europe and beyond)... recently moved from dublin to newry and love it... it is asmall place (see above discussion) but people are welcoming... its handily placed for easy access to Belfast and Dublin for the 'big city experience, though for me travel to the UK is easy with airports to choose from.
I think you'll love it here... just come with an open mind and a smile! |

If your moving from England to the Republic of Ireland and retaining your job you need to be wary of tax rules , before pandemic struck our company did not allow home working for people who lived in RoI as there was tax implications , this was waived in light of pandemic but am not sure it was ever made permanent |
