It's gas that people still sign up their kids to the catholic church, an institution you can't leave once you're a member. It's a life long commitment and children have not even a chance to have their say.

I wonder does this still have to do with getting their children into schools? Or is this changing?

i think its changing. Our girls school is a catholic school but they only ask for a baptism cert in 2nd class if the child is making their communion.

I know I had to do this even though I didn't actually go to the christings, communions or confirmations.

Its all about getting them into the nearest school

Only when necessary for weddings and funerals.. but thankfully most people are seeing the light and opting for nonreligious options instead.

Hopefully going forward more families will ditch the hypocrisy of communions and falsifications for school and other social purposes, and stand up and be free.

It does, yeah. Although Catholic schools can't refuse someone because they're not Catholic, they are allowed to prioritise admission based on the school's values, ie Catholics first.

Some families do it to avoid an argument with their older relatives, and some just want the tradition and the day out and see no harm in it (like a lot of Catholic weddings, lol)

That's just a shit excuse, as bad as the one 'we do it for the grandparents'. It's simply conforming. I mean I do respect anyones religion, not saying you shouldn't be catholic etc but as long as the catholic church doesn't allow to quit, commitment to the church should not be made by the parents but by each person once you reach adulthood.

I don't go to mass personally except for weddings, funerals, anniversaries, Christmas - but if I'm home and my father asks me to go with him I will. 30 minutes out of my life and it makes him happy.

If I was to get married or have kids though, I wouldn't be involving the Catholic Church.

Besides weddings or funerals I'd rather stay out of buildings run by an organisTion that facilitated unimaginable horror on kids and women across the world. As someone who came out of a mother and baby home there is no organisation on the planet I have more contempt for than the catholic church. Bigggest con job in history.

I'm agonistic more than anything else .But I wouldn't knock anyone else for their beliefs and I've seen how much people's faith can help them at the toughest times in their lives.

Sure why not. They have dragons and everything in the bible so I like to imagine

him riding a dragon like something in game of thrones. If they can have dragons then sure why not bikes too. Never let history/reality get in the way of a good story.

After a 'bad experience' many years ago, I formally ended any contact with formalised religious worship, although my deep-seated scepticism about any higher deity ended even before that.

However, I abhor insulting peoples'faith, from which they derive comfort, a since of belong and a way to rationalise any illnesses or suffered.

Dogmatists can however easily incur my wrath!

Frankly, I look forward to a time in Ireland when deconsecrated church buildings are repurposed or demolished.

You can't officially leave though, meaning the Church still counts you as a Catholic until you die. This gives them power to influence society because the "majority" of people in Ireland are technically Catholic - regardless of their actual beliefs, due to being baptised as a child.

On one of his radio programmes RTE's Ray D'Arcy made the astute observation that the catholic church has really fucked up this country; the Catholic Church hierarchy formally complained and he was hauled up before management.

The out of touch hierarchy would love if there could be a return to the glory days of John Charles McQuaid, Archbishop of Dublin who effectively ruled this country.

People are no longer gullible, sycophantic, or kow-towing to any section of the Catholic Church, thankfully.

Never had any interest in organised religion, so would only go for weddings and funerals. We as a nation are slowly moving towards a more secular society. It's about time we had a referendum to see if the majority of people would vote to remove the Catholic church ethos from schools, hospitals, and social services.

The Irish Catholic Church is an irrelevance that the vast majority have no respect for; Irish primary and secondary education needs to be removed from their control.

Anyone who believes in people rising from the dead, heaven or hell etc., needs to be referred for psychotherapy or a psychiatric assessment.

The only people whom I see going to religious services are the elderly; young people have had enough of their hypocrisy.

I used to go to church every week and was involved in parish activities and committees. I don't anymore because of the actions and inactions of priests, nuns, bishops etc etc but to say that anyone who is a believer needs psychiatric help is ridiculous.

Everyone needs something to hold on to in their lives. Something to get them through each day and if that happens to be religion I don't have a problem with that.

Some people even believe in politics. Should they be sectioned too?

Yes, its possible to leave... Of a fashion. I went through the rigmarole, letters, invitations to meet an archbishop etc. The end result is "your name has been placed on a register of defectors, held at Archbishops Palace"... I think they take it seriously.

The Canadians are role models in how we should treat the church. We have had scandal after scandal for decades and no one does anything.

Last month they had a similar story to our septic tank scandal, and they started burning churches to the ground.

You'd have thought murdering and wiping out entire civilisations across central and south America was incompatible with church going as well but no, it was apparently what the bible wanted them to do.

Swinging may be seen as more evil than the r@pe, turture and slaughter of innocents though. Religion is funny like that.

Some here swing based on a solid foundation of their outside life , some to escape it

And quiet places with good architecture where hymns get sang are a good place to reflect

Isnt sex outside marriage disallowed in the catholic church... as well as contraception?

This isn't a rhetorical question..

Are catholics allowed to have casual sex with condoms?

Well those things are against the rules but you can get forgiveness for anything. "

But you have to live with the guilt.

It that really how it works? Catholics can repeatedly break important church rules, and happily chat about it on an Internet forums, and say sorry and be forgiven, and then continue on carelessly with total disregard to the rules. Surely at some point the priest is gonna tell then to fuck off lol.

I believe that you can live a complete life of debauchery and ask for forgiveness to get into heaven....unless you get hit by a bus

Wow. That's super-handy. Confessing is the key I guess.I wonder how sorry those Catholics who fuck people with contraception really are though. I wonder if they tell the priest all the dirty things they do also. I guess missing stuff out means it's burning in eternal damnation.

Apparently using contraception is a "mortal sin" whatever that means.

Quite a few priests have very little high ground from which to preach to anyone from.

I have a formerly close friend who is deeply religious and gives off this pious aura. He is the most intolerant person I have ever known and I feel it with him years ago over his attitude to pretty much anyone who isn't white, Irish and catholic. Hypocricy is rife within many organised religions.

"Curious to see if any/many still go to church regularly ! "

Haven’t been in years and my children were brought up to question all religions….

And now my eldest has insisted she is getting married in a church
