I don't believe in ghosts. At night I'm a little more open-minded...
My wardrobe doors need to be closed when I go to bed. I wouldn't watch a horror/sci-fi movie or psychothriller on my own anymore. Drama and comedy it is. And here's me thinking I'm a self-assured single woman |

I get this
There's something about living on your own puts the willies up you in the dark (not in a good way!)
I see things in shadows and the mind plays tricks.
I confess to leaving the landing light on when I go to bed |

Woke up at 3 and though someone was standing there "
See, that just wouldn't happen in my house!
I push the extension lead under the bed so the light doesn't cast shadows (yes, the wand does need charging and has to be close to hand ) |

I’m with you on horror movies, I just don’t see the enjoyment in them.
Don’t believe in ghosts either but I remember waking in the middle of the night and I was certain someone had been standing over and watching me. |

While I agree with my other half above, there are often times when I'm alone at night and I wake with that feeling that I'm not alone and it ain't funny I can tell you.
I usually think of some kink or fantasy and the thought goes away.

Living on your own means when you hear a noise you know there’s not supposed to be anyone else in the house.
One time my house alarm went off at 4am and I thought it was the car alarm until I was looking out the window trying to turn the car alarm off and noticed the blue flashing light on my wall (until then I didn’t know my house alarm had a blue flashing light) I grabbed a bat and got to the top of the stairs and realising I was naked I though it better to put shorts on in case potential intruders overpowered me and I was found naked at the bottom of the stairs. I jumped into everyone waiting to see someone but nothing. He led the alarm and it was triggered in the dining room. After further investigation a massive spider was making a web infront of the sensor. I still had to check every room in the house and behind the doors before going back to bed. |

I believe in spirits and ghosts. I’m not troubled by them, I believe they can be a positive presence.
My paternal grandmother used to say “the dead will never hurt ya, it’s the living to be afraid of”. |

I woke one night to a beeping and whirring noise
As my ears adjusted I realized it was the microwave and convinced myself and axe murderer was cooking himself a starter before coming upstairs to devour me as the main
Terrified I plucked up the courage to creep downstairs and found noone there but the microwave had turned itself on a repeat cycle and was roasting hot
Needless to say all kitchen devices are switched off at the socket every night now |

I grew up in an old, old house and spent time in other very, very old places in the immediate neighborhood with family...one in particular was run as a B&B, with regular visitors for seances and ghost hunting, as it had a couple of famous stories associated with it. Believe me, I slept with the lights on in that place when on my own
So many unexplained stories from my sister and her family who still live in my old family home... make for great entertainment during the day, but keep me awake at night when I stay there lol |

Not a firm believer but growing up there was definitely something off about my old house. Door would open by itself, the tele would turn itself on even though the remote would be on top of the tele and when we got a dog he used to growl at a particular corner in the sitting room and a corner at the top of the stairs |

I 100% believe in ghosts/spirits
When i moved into my house 16 years ago the previous occupants daughter died at 16 a few years previously and she was here witb us fir 3 years...myself and my ex used to hear her moving about upstairs as did visiting friends (my kids were 2 and 4 and when we went up ti check the footsteps they would b fast asleep)
My daughter often talked about the young girl she would chat to
Woke up one morning bout 3 years later to a photo on the floor of said young girl and her brother in the middle of our bedroom floor
That same weekend her parents (still friends of ours) climbed a cliff in calpe Spain and a butterfly landed on his hand (its generally too high a place for butterflies)and we never heard her again
I believe she finally moved on but she was a very relaxing presence |

My house is haunted for sure.
Its previous owner died in the same bedroom I use here.
Many a night a door opens or closed while I'm in bed.
A few times it sounded like the fire was being fussed with a poker as well but anytime I have a look ,,,Nada |

I hope she found piece and it's amazing how children know if a presence is good or not...
I slept in my mother's bedroom (the parents were away) and couldn't for the life of me sleep, feeling an uncomfortable presence. Told my sister and her hubby, who were well used to all sorts, living in a different part of the house. They told me to ask the "spirit" to leave me be and see what happens...I tell ya, I felt pretty stupid the next evening standing in that room having a kind "chat" with whatever it was...slept like a baby the next few nights there lol...
My mother often told of waking up to the smell of cooking at 3 or 4 in the morning...the room being nowhere near the kitchen and obviously nobody cooking at that hour of the morning, but it was a room above what would have been servant's quarters in the olden days... |

One brave man you are, although I do remember working in a supermarket and it used to be an old jail years before that and it is supposed to be haunted, I was there for 6am cleaning and you would hear doors banging and like that no-one around |

Was sitting in the living room with my parents years ago, no one else in the house then all of a sudden we heard loud heavy foot steps up the stairs coming from my bedroom, went up to check, the door was open and lights where on but no one there. Then a couple of weeks later I was in bathroom brushing my teeth looked in the mirror and one of the glass bottles of bubble bath just moved on it’s on and fell into the bath!!! We moved house and safe kinda stuff started happening again, we where in the living room and my dads boots where in front of the fire and one just turn on its side for no reason, we all seen it and didn’t know what to say. My parents split up a few years ago and all the creepy stuff stopped when she left, we swear she had evil spirits around her. Probably haunt us when she dies |

I lived in an old Bank house (which was supposed to be haunted). One night was asleep on my own and feet were out at the end of duvet. Definitely felt a freezing hand on my feet and woke up shouting. The room was like a deep freeze and absolutely baltic for about 2 minutes after. Definitely believe in spirits. |

Also one day I was on my own, went out the back to put washing up, closed the door over, went to go back in and it was locked! They where old doors with bug out keys that could only be locked when you turned them, had to climb through a window and the key was on the floor and had to unlock it to open it. I started smoking soon after that to calm my nerves |

A professor at DCU was giving a lecture on Paranormal Studies.
To get a feel for his audience, he asks, "How many people here believe in ghosts?" About 90 students raise their hands.
"Well, that's a good start. Out of those who believe in ghosts, do any of you think you have seen a ghost?" About 40 students raise their hands.
"That's really good. I'm really glad you take this seriously. Has anyone here ever talked to a ghost?" About 15 students raise their hand.
"Has anyone here ever touched a ghost?" Three students raise their hands.
"That's fantastic. Now let me ask you one question further...Have any of you ever made love to a ghost?"
Way in the back, Paddy raises his hand.
The professor takes off his glasses and says, "Son, all the years I've been giving this lecture, no one has ever claimed to have made love to a ghost. You've got to come up here and tell us about your experience."
The young student from Cavan replied with a nod and a grin, and began to make his way up to the podium.
When he reached the front of the room, the professor asks, "So, Paddy , tell us what it's like to have sex with a ghost?"
Paddy replied, "Ah bollix I thought you said goats." |

Years ago when my partner was terminally ill he joked about coming back as a white cat (knowing my love of animals) and how I would have to take him in and treat him like a queen
I told my friend and several days after he died we were sitting in my kitchen when a white cat appeared at the patio door. We nearly killed each other scrabbling to get out of the room
It was rock paper scissors then to go back in. |

That reminds me of a soldier in the Curragh being court martialled for being caught shagging a sheep back in the '80s, he claimed he went outside for a piss and the sheep backed into him. He got a dishonourable discharge (no pun intended)

Definitely felt a freezing hand on my feet and woke up shouting. The room was like a deep freeze and absolutely baltic for about 2 minutes after. Definitely believe in spirits."
Speaking of feet, when I was small I had to sleep in the foetal position because I was convinced the bottom of the bed was where all the creepy crawlies lived. |

"Years ago when my partner was terminally ill he joked about coming back as a white cat (knowing my love of animals) and how I would have to take him in and treat him like a queen
I told my friend and several days after he died we were sitting in my kitchen when a white cat appeared at the patio door. We nearly killed each other scrabbling to get out of the room
It was rock paper scissors then to go back in.
Sorry to hear about your partner...id take comfort in the white cat"
Yes, that must have been a really tough time - I too would take comfort in the white cat.

I'd just got over the cat shock when a bird came down the chimney a couple of days later. I scooped it up and gently put it on the window sill outside only to see the cat appear and I had to avert my eyes.... |

As for symbolism, white cats are symbolic of rebirth and resurrection as per their 9 lives, happiness, money, prosperity, healing, spirituality and even tolerance.

The starling symbolizes our skills and traits, silently influencing our decisions before we emerge vigorously after we've gathered enough strength and courage.
Spiritual meaning of birds is one of elevation, enlightenment, hope, and wisdom...the spiritual meaning of birds flying in our house is of peace, change, and freedom. In other words, they symbolize a transformation of some sort in the coming days.

Oh I believe in ghosts simply because I have seen something that can only be described as ghost activity until someone experience such things they will never believe in ghosts and believe me I was in that boat for a long time
I don't like leaving doors open at night sometimes I lock my bedroom door while I'm asleep in there (crazy I know) |

Well, I'm delighted to have brought some positivity with that, if it means something to you. It's all a little out there and not for everyone. I can't imagine the loss of a partner like that and hope you had support to go through that time and are able to live life to the full now.
I hope you do sleep well tonight |

I hate it when my brother Charlie has to go away. My parents constantly try to explain to me how sick he is. That I am lucky for having a brain where all the chemicals flow properly to their destinations like undammed rivers. When I complain about how bored I am without a little brother to play with, they try to make me feel bad by pointing out that his boredom likely far surpasses mine, considering his confine to a dark room in an institution. I always beg for them to give him one last chance. Of course, they did at first. Charlie has been back home several times, each shorter in duration than the last. Every time without fail, it all starts again. The neighbourhood cats with gouged out eyes showing up in his toy chest, my dad's razors found dropped on the baby slide in the park across the street, mom's vitamins replaced by bits of dishwasher tablets. My parents are hesitant now, using "last chances" sparingly. They say his disorder makes him charming, makes it easy for him to fake normalcy, and to trick the doctors who care for him into thinking he is ready for rehabilitation. That I will just have to put up with my boredom if it means staying safe from him. I hate it when Charlie has to go away. It makes me have to pretend to be good until he is back. |

I bought an old house a while back. The previous owner papered EVERY wall and CEILING! Removing it is brutal, but oddly satisfying. The best feeling is getting a long peel, similar to your skin when you're peeling from a sunburn. I don't know about you but I kinda make a game of peeling, on the hunt for the longest piece before it rips.Under a corner section of paper in every room is a person’s name and a date. Curiosity got the best of me one night when I Googled one of the names and discovered the person was actually a missing person, the missing date matching the date under the wallpaper! The next day, I made a list of all the names and dates. Sure enough each name was for a missing person with dates to match. We notified the police who naturally sent out the crime scene team. I overhead one tech say "yup, it's human." Human? What's human? "Mister where is the material you removed from the walls already? Why I asked? Well it isn't wallpaper you were removing."

" I get this
There's something about living on your own puts the willies up you in the dark (not in a good way!)
I see things in shadows and the mind plays tricks.
I confess to leaving the landing light on when I go to bed
Yeah, I prefer a different kinda willies too (Note to self - more porn before bed )
I live in a bungalow to top it off
Your lucky to live in a bungalow, imagine someone or something coming up the stairs then where to you go, at least in a bungalow you can escape quickly
Not if they're in your room
Stop! Both scenarios are terrifying
Indeed they are!
Maybe a baseball bat is on the shopping list now...
you don't have one under the bed???
Believe me, you don't want to know what's under my bed a baseball bat isn't it (note to self - remove adjustable bed restraints )"
Do no such thing! |

Just found this thread. I know ghosts and spirits exist, alongside us. I've met a few, and the experiences didn't scare me, that much. But one that kept me awake, hoping I wouldn't fall asleep really shocked me.
I was staying in a friend's house while she was away. During the night I dreamt there was a bat like creature, a woman at the end of my bed. Evil, vicious, fanged, with claws on her wings. I woke out of my nightmare, to see this creature at the end of the bed.. I wasn't asleep, she was real, and felt like she was trying to get inside my head. I stayed awake for hours, trying to keep her away from me. I later found out she was a Harpy, a creature from Greek mythology. I've no idea why it happened to me. |

I also live alone. I lock my bedroom door at night but it's less fear and more common sense. If someone tries to sneak into my room at night when I'm asleep they'll have to break down my door and I'll not sleep through that.
