To be a good coach or manager you don't need to excel at the skill yourself. You need to be good at retaining information and at communicating. Generally the best coaches in the world are the ones who didn't excel at the sport they are coaching too.
Most PTs in commerical gyms are poor though, even the ones who look good. They seem to end up doing the career because they enjoy going to the gym so assume they will enjoy being a PT.

Yeah it's like Jose Mourinho a very mediocre player but yet has been very successful when it comes to winning trophies |

Its like this...there are only two barbers in this particular town , ok , and both charge the same ,one barber's shop is totally delapadated and his haircut is scandalous...the other barbers shop is a state of the art joint and the barbers haircut is immaculate ...who do you go to for your haircut ? |

"What about practicing what you preach?
How will i be motivated coming to the gym looking at this pot belly PT in front me telling me things "
He/she are there for your fitness...not themselves...they know what you need...just because they might be in your eyes out of shape , its what they know is whats important...like Rocky's trainer " Micky " was no heavyweight boxer himself was he ? |

I can see where you are coming from to a point. I studied many years in university about health and fitness. Saw a job as a strength and conditioning coach at a sport club. I didnt even apply cause at the time was built like a jockeys whip why would they listen to me. Now I have lockdown weight but it doesnt mean they dont know what they are talking about. Just cause dont look like what expect may know a hell of a lot
I quite often see people that look super fit and healthy that genuienly havent a clue. It can be surprising both ways |

Where does it say they need to ne in shape. It's an added bonus yes but a good coach is there to advise, educate and direct, get the best out of you and push you to your limits. Have you seen Glen Mills, usain Bolts coach and coach to the Jamaican relay team. He couldn't run to catch the bus but he's one of tbe best coaches in the world. He turned to coaching affer he faiiled miserably at athletics. |

I used to work as a personal trainer for many years and can confirm many of the best trainers do not look gym fit.
A parent in their late 40s working long hours doesn't have time to workout to the sane extent as a young guy or girl new to the industry |

Its like anything. Look at most football managers, terrible or at least sub par players but great managers. Khabib’s dad, wasnt in shape yet he trained his son to be an undefeated mma fighter and best of all time. A PT is good at their job which is training YOU not themselves |

I'd go to the delapidated barber shop with the shit haircut.. he got it cut in the fancy place.. the fancy place guy got his good haircut from the dilapidated place.. |

hopefully, I'm making scenes with my answer here,
my opinion is that you don't need to be in great shape to know how to help people get into great shape, but having said that the fitness industry has become washed with people that can just get their cert and away they go, but I think its a good sgin when a trainer can maintain there of own shape to insprire others to train. because if you dont follow your own rules for it, it's hard to show that what you do works. |

I've never been one for the gym but a few years ago I was working a weird shift pattern and thought it would be a good way to fill boring mornings.
After a few weeks of not really knowing what I was doing I decided to pay a PT for a month.
I wasn't looking to lose any weight because I was burning between 2500 and 3000 calories a day through my job so when he drew up a personalised diet for less than 2000 calories and almost every item contained dairy which he knew I couldn't eat I started to doubt his knowledge.
In the gym he spent more time flexing and demonstrating what I should be doing than I actually did on the equipment.
He had the look but very little going on between his ears and every time I questioned him he offered me a free session as an apology.
He wasn't a novice and had been a PT for 7 or 8 years so I can only assume that people fell for the tan and the hair and the abs.
Book and cover comes to mind so it wouldn't bother me what a PT looks like if they show commitment to the clients and can demonstrate an actual knowledge of what they are doing. |

As the saying goes, don't judge a book by its cover. I train 6 days a week, eat a healthy enough diet. Ran a pretty decent marathon, done half ironmen, only retired from senior hurling, etc etc and for whatever reason I still carry a bit of timber. So be kind |
