I don’t think there’s anything unique about any chipper to make it the best or better than another, all are supplied by the one wholesaler so it’s all the same.
But KC’s in cork is another level |

There was one in east Belfast called The Maple Leaf, on the Belmont Road, which was very good; good quality nosh, very clean and well managed.
But it's a few years since I've been there.
In my opinion, the key to a Chipper's success is the quality of the potatoes used and the cooking oil; the bad ones use cheap oil and don't change it frequently enough.
In the distant past, the really superior ones used beef dripping, which was exceptionally flavoursome.
Some well known chippers, with an enviable reputation do not deserve it!

Is having the best fish the only criteria for best chipper ? What about burgers, battered sausages etc. What about the batter on the fish ? Thin crispy , flakey. There are so many variables to the best chipper.
I'd say the chips are what make a chipper way to many chipper's use frozen chips so that should ban them from the competition right away. Chips should be cut from potatoes peeled and soaked that day. |

Can't disagree with any of that.
Judging the fish can give a good overall measure of the standard of the place though. Burgers etc are usually just supplied by wholesalers and basically are pretty much (most, not all) the same thing with the only variety being in the garnish.
The fish though is more individual. Different levels of freshness for a start, vastly different batters with a variation in the cooking as well.
Beshoffs fish is pretty good. Sweeney's in Greystones is damn good as well and I love Harry Ramsden's batter myself, if I could get it anywhere these days and even if it did go downhill over the last few years. |

"Ferrari in Ringsend was one of the only chippers you could still buy Ray ( not sure if they still sell it) but Ringsend used to be called Raytown because of the fish. "
Beshoff's in Clontarf opened their takeaway next door to their fishmonger's. Basically anything they sold in the fish shop could be bought cooked in the chipper. When you ordered it in the chipper the staff member nipped out the back door and in the back door of the fishmonger's and arrived back with your order and cooked it. That's a long time ago though. |

I wouldn't be able to say for sure as there is a lot of chips out there...
But John's Cafe in Walkinstown seems to score high on The standardized Takeaway score sheet. |

"To be fair, the title above should read "the best chipper you've eaten in" rather than best in Ireland.
Unless you've eaten from them all you're not going to know. "
Are you saying next time we've a best tits/arse/balls etc. thread, we've to fondle them all to find the best? |

sounds reasonable... however... I am not sure how we could establish a statistically significant data sample... |

Any of this site's members should make a particular point of visiting Long's traditional fish and chip shop in Belfast!
It is located down behind the famous Europa Hotel, and is unbeatable.
Over the years, I have visited dozens of chippers throughout the UK and Ireland and this is the best; even better than the original Hardy Ramsden's in Guiseley, Yorkshire, which has been renamed, I think. |

"Leo Burdocks original in Christchurch is famous for a reason. Granted not as good as years ago but still quality."
When I lived in Dublin, I made a point of visiting Burdocks; good, but not as good as Longs in Belfast. |

The chipper on William Street beats them all for chips. Irresistible when walking past. |
