Ok so there is a book by Niel Strauss called the game which I read(but don't practice) which talks about being an AMOG which is the Alpha Male of the group. It's like the leader of the pack, in most groups a leader will usually emerge.
This book also promotes an approach called negging which involves saying something negative to a beautiful woman in order to know them off their pedestal. It's sad to say this but sometimes this approach works once in a while which is why you get so many dickheads saying really crappy shit
In modern times some people see being alpha as a badge of prime mocking those damn "beta cucks" But everyone group is at war these days races, sexuality's and now personality types. As long we bicker amongst ourselves we won worry about greater powers. |

I see no issue with it. In group situations alpha males/females are often evident. Not just in scenarios that involve sex. But even in that dynamic there are definitely those who prefer an alpha as their opposite number |

The alpha male is based on a book published in the 70's called "The Wolf: Ecology and Behavior of an Endangered Species" by David Mech. The author wrote about the pack of wolves and according to his observations on some wolves in captive, every pack has just one wolf that would exert dominance, aka the alpha male.
However, in 99 he published a paper refuting his earlier discovery in light of research about their behaviour in the wild.
I'm short, it's nothing but arrogant man who want to fell better about themselves. |

I have seen this happen so many times in real life, and yet it makes me sick every time I see it.
As a matter of fact I think there is a certain 'school of thought' going around where this is seen as the infallible tactic to 'get the girl'.
Now comes the controversial part: I've seen same mechanism applied the other way around as well.
And in the end its all about who is going to control whom, have sole possession of, etc...
If only everyone got along and had that one sex a day pill, everyone would be better, I think. |

I think it's wayyy to complex to use these terms with humans,..I've also noticed that most people who talk about Alpha and Beta all the time would infact be Beta if it actually existed.
As for that other thing, I am not sure I've ever met a guy who insulted a woman to get her. There is that dance that happens in vanilla life, where you can kind of playfully jeer each other. I think it's testing each other's intelligence among other things. Many many women also like the guy that looks like he is not to intrested, it's like he is keeping his on point genetic material a secret . Of course I am useless at it and too nice. |

A real Alpha Male doesnt need to say they are one. They should also be kind as respectable. Alphas are respected people and to be respected, you need to respect others. Also it doesnt hurt if you are good in the sack lol |

Yep, that's it.
Confident in themselves, without having to make a statement, or slag others off.
Naturally they are the most authoritative in any groups, without having to be obvious about why.

Exactly. The whole Alpha Male thing only came about in captivity. In the wild, observations were very different.
Social animals need to work together for the benefit of the group. It's essential for survival in such conditions. A genuine 'Alpha' cares for the pack.

The term alpha male originates in pack animals such as wolves, who cooperate to bring down prey and share the spoils; but ethologists believe recent studies contradict previous observations which were misinterpreted.
The term alpha male, anthropologically, refers to primates who control a small group, beat off the opposition and copulate with the fertile females.
Humans do not live in small groups; my impression of an alpha male is: an arrogant, self-satisfied, domineering, bejewelled idiot who appeals primarily to his opposite number of the female gender.
Humans exhibit significantly more complex behaviour than other primates; there is a continuum of male behaviours; on the intelligence scale I personally categorise alpha males within the middle range of the bell curve; those of us in the uppermost percentiles exhibit a more complex sophisticated, and ultimately more successful modus operandi. |

"Someone who's never read a book. "
Actually someone who's trying to elecit discerning opinions, and is being deliberately provocative.
I only ever met one individual who specifically described himself as an alpha male; he was an insecure, pompous conman who had successfully ingratiated himself into an elite group for the sole purpose of exploiting them. |

I've no doubt there are alpha males and females in both sexual and non sexual environments. It's people that refer to themselves as such. Partly because I find it has a streak of arrogance which I find quite unattractive. Also it's the audience that effectively chooses the alpha and one person's alpha isn't another person's. |

A real life Alpha can be described in one word. Cool. He doesnt get flustered or aggressive, he only takes action if action comes at him. He has confidence in himself and his ability but doesnt need to announce it to the world. |

The leader of a wolf pack is the alpha male. He's usually the biggest, strongest, fastest and most vicious wolf in the pack. He gets the first choice of the females and the food.
There are lots of "alpha" personalities in sports and business. People who strive to be the top dog. People who are born leaders.
And that's fine. They can be the best version of themselves they want.
We all know friend groups where a person is the defacto leader. Not in the toxic way described above but just in a "we will do this tonight" kinda way.
But if someone needs to tell you that they are an alpha male then surely they are not an alpha male. |

Frans de Waal, the primate expert who popularised the term "alpha male" has a really interesting TED talk on the many misconceptions surrounding alphas, and the misuse of the term to describe someone who is aggressive and bullying and ruthless.

As others have pointed out - the whole "Alpha" phenomena is based on a false scientific claim.
I wasn't aware it was widely known but apparently you deviants are some well educated fuckers!
I work with people for a living, some have been through horrendous experiences and trauma that aren't fit to be repeated here. Some are just wankers. Others are some of the finest humans I've ever had the honour of working alongside.
Everyone's different. There's no such thing as an Alpha male or Alpha human.
I'm a strong dude, I can bench press 100kg with no issue. Some men can't.
But I also can't run for SHIT... Other men/people run marathons.
Does that make me or them an alpha?
And if we want to talk about personality types; if I'm involved in a dangerous/life/death situation I'm pretty good, I don't panic and can think and operate rationally (might have something to do with managing a life long anxiety disorder, I'm constantly in fight or flight I'm told) but if you put me into a social situation with a group of strangers then the animal I most resemble is a poor wee baby rabbit in the headlights of an oncoming car.
We all have strengths and weaknesses... My quirks and personality doesn't make anyone superior or inferior to me.
Just because we have different strengths does not make anyone an Alpha and me a Beta, or vice versa.

Yeah, I don't think Alpha Male is a thing in humans whatever about animals. We're way more complex than that. It sounds like something someone with a Narcisistic personality would say. It's just cringe to be honest! |

Its a completely outdated concept especially in humans.
For example - Tyson Fury pretty much the epitome of masculinity and power. Incredibly smart with leadership qualities. Yet has shown to be completely weak on numerous occasions and almost vulnerable.

Only because the evolutionary mechanism of survival of the fittest has become largely redundant for our species.. if that were to return so would the role of the alpha |

I think it's still survival of the fittest, meaning those that can have more children do and those that don't do not and no longer exist, tis the only game in town.
But if you mean based on strength and aggression they have seen in chimps and other primates it is important but that those that are also good at making bonds through friendship and relationships do better.and have a larger gang of individuals behind then. Almost like the begining of politics I suppose. |

The true alpha is like a protector. He stands between threats and his pack or pride. He shields them from danger but also he gets to sit back most of the time and do nothing but eat, sleep and shag. He generally only has to fight off other males who want his position. The human Alpha's most perceive it bears no relation to this. The human alpha, tends to be loud, cocky, a bully and when it comes down to it, unreliable. In human society, the ladies decide who the alpha is. That's the biggest difference. |

I don't like being ordered around by lads I don't respect (or trust what they say). I prefer to go my own way and possibly lead others in the process. Does that make me a so called 'alpha'? No, I just don't like bullies It's all about context and perspective. |

I think this has been blown out of proportion. Sure Op got a message where guy stated to be an Alpha male, I dont think is his intention to insult or be in anyways pretentious.
We all feel different about ourselves and like someone previously said people call themselves cock, milfs, vixen, bull and we all know what people referring to in this examples. As when someone say they are Alpha males or Alpha females we all know what they mean by that statement! Whether they are or they aren't , do they exist in human society or not, if it's a measurement of strength or weakness, It doesn't matter one bit!!!
We all know what the person mean.
As per the Op I mean she chose a good topic to get people talking is what I would say ! |

I agree it's been blown out of proportion. It's just another stupid label, playing towards the desire of many women looking out for a confident masculine man.
As for your last point, while the man's approach might be rather clumsy I wonder how the reaction would be if a first message of a woman was publicly discussed and ridiculed in the same way, I'd go even that far saying it's against the forum rules. |
