More than a decade ago I had the opportunity to become a grey hat hacker, in that I executed pentration testing of a database (without permission) that I discovered had multiple flaws.
I had simultaneous access to multiple personal computers located adjacent to each other; I was able to logon using the same password and was able to identify sensitive personal information about people in highly sensitive occupations using a jigsaw method.
On the face of it the system designers had embedded security measures, but as I had access to multiple computers I was able to conduct different procedures simultaneously and gradually built up a complete picture of multiple targets.
To avoid potential prosecution, I compiled a detailed report, and forwarded it to the appropriate authorities.
My submission was not even acknowledged; and the opportunity to penetrate the system became unavailable when the computers were networked and thereafter only permitted use of one PC.
It was an interesting experience! |
