Belfast

Not at all because I don't drink and never have done but its something that should have been done years ago to stop supermarkets ripping the arse out of it.

No effect on me as not a huge drinker and don't buy it much. If they think it's going to stop people drinking as much they are fooling themselves

This should have been brought in years ago. I enjoy a drink but dont worry too much about the price.

Without doubt, alcoholism is ripe in this country. But I don't think a price hike will make any difference.

I know several family owned off licences who may be affected, but time will tell.

It will mainly affect those who drink spirits by the looks of it.

Agreed. People with less income do like a cheap bottle of wine at the end of the week too.

somewhere

if you haven't got a large disposable income you'll end up paying more than people who do for the same type of product.

If you buy branded beer or spirits it won't effect you

If you buy lidl spirits, wine or beer it will

I think the figures show that alcohol consumption is dropping anyway

Greatest load of shite I've ever heard in my life.. I'm not a drinker anymore but have used alcohol in the past its the only legal drug we have available to us and they want to impose minimum unit pricing.. Ridiculous really if people want to have a drink cheaply then they should be able too.. In some instances beer will be nearly double the price it is in the Republic compared with NI.. Off licences along the border are licking their lips at the thought of it.. Really think its a step too far and a term I hate to use describes it perfectly nannny statism.. Give people the right to choose not take our freedom away..

Yep and an alcoholic will do anything to get a drink.. His/her kids will go hungry.. The rent won't be paid.. They would choose alcohol over food any day.. Mup only makes people's lives harder not better..

Only plateaued, not dropping

We're still drinking an average of 40 litres of vodka each per year

I think it needs to be explained more to everyone.

I don't see it affecting me much because I tend to buy what i like, as in IPA or whiskeys.

I think it will definitely affect younger people and potentially it could open up new illegal streams of alcohol sales and homemade drinks.

There needs to be parity on the whole island.

Its stinks of the usual one size fits all approach of the government without any real attempt at original thought.

Generally a bad idea that was probably pushed by the the lobby groups it will benefit, as in pubs, clubs etc and not the people.

But what the hell do i know?

I've never been much of a drinker so the MUP legislation won't affect me. My issue is it's yet another attempt by the nanny state at social engineering, to regulate every area of people's lives. The risks involved with excessive consumption of alcohol are well known, so if an adult wishes to quietly drink themselves into oblivion every day, it's not the government's business.

East / North, Cork

I mostly drink craft beer and non-budget wine so it doesn't effect me much. I absolutely see the logic behind what they are trying to do, but it feels like a very blunt instrument and definitely disproportionately effects the less well off. The best taxes are progressive and higher earners pay more. If we really need to discourage drink through taxation then tax the high end more than the low end and use the revenue on treatment programmes and rehabilitation.

Agree with this. The cost doesn't matter to an addict.
