Did it feel normal or was it always strange as a child
I've seen lots of pictures and the kids never seemed frightened by a soldier with a gun |

There was no fear because it was the norm. There was a helicopter pad 200 yards from my bedroom window that was used 4 times a day. Having a Chinook arriving was exciting to start with but that didn't last long. My bedroom window was my TV and it wasn't censored especially when vehicles were blowing up. |

Apart from that everything else was normal and we played on the streets and cycled for miles.
It was funny once though when playing football in a field at a friend's house.
Chasing after the ball one of my friends was swallowed up by the earth when he fell headlong into a trench containing 6 soldiers that had been dug silently during the night as part of a surveillance op. I don't know who got the biggest shock but luckily it turned out ok |

That is worlds apart from my childhood memories. We had no fear. Out playing everyday only to go home when dinner was ready.. only ever saw the north on tv.. like most down south i bet.. compelling era indeed ..worlds apart but on the same island.. |

Playing “war” down the fields throwing stones at each other -no-one ever lost an eye. Remember ‘War of The Buttons’?
Cycling to the highest hill, and then racing to the bottom -usually involved a crash or some form of injury.
Tag/tig -the more the merrier on long summer nights.
