Sleep hygiene is an important aspect of getting a good night's sleep.
Make sure the room is completely dark, and fit blackout blinds.
Keep the ambient air temperature low, and have adequate ventilation.
Keep the bed temperature comfortably low.
Do not consume any stimulating drinks such as coffee for at least four hours before retiring.
Use the bedroom solely for sleeping and sex, not for watching television or online activity.
Do not eat any food for at least four hours before retiring to bed.
Adopt a with-down period each evening, and have it as a routine.
Personally, I have found blackout blinds to be the most effective initial measure. There is too much external light in most peoples bedrooms, particularly since public street lighting became commonplace.
There is a lot of high quality info available online about sleep hygiene.

I'm a very light sleeper and wake at the drop of a pin, also constantly toss and turn during night much to the annoyance of wife. Alcohol helps |

I should be well past my expiration date so
It is a fact that lack of sleep can bring on all sorts of autoimmune diseases as well as other things but having tried to cure my insomnia for more than 40 years I have given up hope at this stage |

Alcohol only puts you into a form of a diuretic coma.. Its not a refreshing sleep albeit a sleep of some form |

Thanks ye all. Most of the above I have done. I reckon it was just one of those nights. Maybe lack of exercise the last few days might be the cause but I reckon I should ( hopefully) conk out tonight. |

I know the feeling. It's torturous!
This might be worth a try:

It's worked for me when I've done it.
I have found that a healthy routine has made the biggest difference for me. Regular exercise, decent diet, and no phone in bed.
Do you notice that your feet are cold when lying awake?
A bath before bedtime might work as well , it'll spike the body temperature and when it starts to fall, that signals that it's time to go to sleep. |

I've worked shift work for the last 5 years and my body clock hasn't a clue what is going on most of the time.
Tonight is my last night shift and I so looking forward to a normal sleep pattern, having nights and weekends off v |
