Tbh I don't feel any different, I gave up for two reasons, preparing meat started to disgust me, and my daughter decided to go vegan so I wanted her to learn some healthy non-meat dishes before she headed to college |

I'm not religious at all, eat very little meat but I try to cook something fishy every Friday just for routine. Today it's a fish burger in a fresh sourdough bun, tomato and lettuce with homemade chips. Ohh and of course I had my Italian salami for breakfast. |

Years ago a website was set up called "countmeout"
I filled in all the online forms and sent them to the Archbishop of Dublin
A few letters back and forth and then I received a cancelled baptism cert and a letter wishing me well in the future
So many people used it that they changed canon law to stop it and refused all requests afterwards

I though you could have it annulled, like a marriage. But no. You write to the church where you were baptised, then you are invited to a private meeting with the local bishop(my skin crawls at the thought), then re confirm to him you want it revoked. Now for the laughable part!!.. Your name is placed on a register of defectors, held in Archbishops House!! The mind boggles. I was tempted to enquire about GDPR, etc, but didn't bother. Anyway, after all that, you become multi orgasmic, have no shame or guilt, and end up on swinger sites. It's a miracle. |

"Do you remember the days when we were allowed to have a pint in the pub on Good Friday... "
The local pubs when I grew up had a football tournament on Good Friday for all the barmen from each pub as it was only one of their 2 days off a year....lots of customers would bring carry out and it was usually a great session |

Even apart from that... it seems like giving them just too much power....
I control my own beliefs and have decided I am no longer part of that institution I don't put roman Catholic on the census. That's good enough for me |

I look at it the same as going to a church for a baptism, marraige, funeral and do all the Christmas stuff like presents mass an put up a crib its tradition so if I'm going to partake in those traditions than I may as well stay off meat for one day too |

Reminds me of the time someone told me that a well known fabber was in fact, Dr Ciara Kelly. They mentioned both in the same sentwnce so I put two and two together (getting 5), delighted with my Sherlock skills. Funny thinking back. Mrs |

That's why I've never heard of her. Listening to news, politics or anything medical is my idea of hell so it wouldn't really matter what she was saying. |

Mercifully the power and influence that the Catholic Church formerly enjoyed (abused) in Ireland is falling exponentially.
One very large church in Dublin has already been demolished, And I look forward to a time when most others are eradicated from Ireland's landscape.
This church bamboozled generations of Irish citizens into conforming to nonsensical rituals such as eating fish on Fridays.
Educated and enlightened citizens are abandoning the church in droves; we were abused, propagandised and hoodwinked for too long.
On a planetary basis, meat consumption is unwise and environmentally damaging; but not because an Argentinian cleric living within an enclave in Rome says so! |

In Ireland, it used to be fish every Friday-presumably as Christ died(allegedly) on a Friday. That changed to only on Good Friday. I remember eating a burger once on Good Friday when I was a kid and felt very sinful. I eat fish now three times a week as it's good to cut back on red meat. |

I have to say....the not being allowed to eat meat on Fridays has been the Catholic churches most shocking influence |

In my opinion, the catholic church can stay. But it should have zero connection with the state and TAX payer funded services. If you want to be a catholic, go for it, but it should have zero influence on my life as an Irish citizen. |

Funny... this is my first time chiming into a topic here on this forum. Interesting one.
So, I have a couple of Irish and Italian friends who say Catholicism is a big part of their country, nationality and identity as Irish/Italians and to them, giving it up is like denouncing who they are i.e. Irish/Italian
My one (Very proud) Irish buddy (family are from Shannon and Cork) believes if he or anyone left the church, it would be a slap in the face to those who fought for a republic as well as Irish and Catholic lives and rights during the struggles between Britain and Ireland. I could agree with him there to an extent and see where he is coming from.
I do think people leaving a religion because of their sexuality/practices or because of actions of others (such as those who commit terrorism or abuse) is silly... yes, I am a believer for the most part and I do believe religion is a relationship between yourself and God and your way of interpreting his words.
The wrongdoings of others have nothing to do with that connection/relationship/belief. You are your own person. |

As someone who very much lived through what you refer to as the "struggle" and who proudly identifies as Irish I don't feel that my face has been slapped by people leaving the Catholic church.
I no longer practice and turned my back on the Catholic church when all the various scandals emerged.
I haven't resigned or had anything revoked but if anything the actions or rather the inactions of the church were a much bigger boot in the balls and kick in the teeth than anything else.
You say the actions of others should have no bearing on your own relationship with God. However as someone who spent 40 years following church guidelines and believing I was part of a bigger picture I would very much argue that when the dispicable actions of those who claim to be the voice of God lead to so much pain and suffering as well as lies and corruption then I will judge them on that and base my own decisions around that.
Those who fought for the Republic also fought for freedom of expression and that includes for those who no longer wish to follow a particular religion. |

Ive never heard of anyone who thinks giving up their religion makes them feel as if they're not Irish.
Are you talking about a 3rd or 4th generation Irish family who look fondly back on the oul sod and still think it's like "The Quiet Man "..
Religion never made me Irish ..it made me catholic and thats all I gave up and renounced ....I'm still Irish.

Each to their own I suppose. People will have their own opinions and beliefs when it comes to their identity.
I have no opinions when it comes to the intertwining of religion and nationality that I don’t hold. I could only see sides such as from why my buddy would think and say those things.
I could only hold my opinions when it comes to believing in God and people who distort religion and give it a bad name causing people to leave. By all means, everyone has their choices. Nothing worst than people who try to shove religion down your throat. I still get lectured by religious people on what I should/shouldn’t be doing.
Like I say, it’s nobody’s business. |
