Might be a stupid idea but every little helps as a well know supermarket says

February is the month for me to try to save as much as possible on the household bills for the year

The way things are I thought people could post money saving idea's to help others out

I shared this on another thread during the week

If you have Sky television at the end of your contract always threaten to leave ( but you dont want to )

You'll get half price for 6 months when they persuade you to stay

Here are some that should help

Married men save money instantly by turning your sofa into a sofa bed simply by forgetting your wedding anniversary.

Save money on expensive nibbles...just turn your keyboard upside down and eat what comes out.

Save money on expensive toilet rolls, coffee, milk and sugar by simply using the toilet in your neighbour's house when you pop in to borrow some coffee, milk and sugar every day

(clearly for when restrictions are lifted)

Alienate as many friends, neighbours and family as possible so they stop inviting you to their stupid weddings, milestone birthday parties, kids communions and confirmations.

Hang on to the select few who give you stuff and mind your kids/dog for free (if it's too late for my first tip of the thread)

I think OP was expecting some 'actual' tips.

Change your banking current account to a bank that does not charge fees. For example, N26 which is a fully online German bank. Fantastic app, debit cards, IBAN that Irish utilities support, and no fees unless you have a requirement to upgrade (which I didn't)

Buy oil/fuel off season

Cancel streaming services you don’t use regularly

Switch off (rather than standby) electronics at night

Defrost your fridge/freezer every 6months....and don’t leave the door open for ages -the fridge has to work harder to re-cool the air the longer you leave it open

Only boil the amount you need in a kettle

Cut your electric showers shorter -just watch your meter to see how much electricity is used when you shower.

Ring your electricity supplier to see if they can match prices to stop you leaving for another provider

Learn a new skill/hobby that is low/no cost

Make a meal plan/shopping list and reduce your shopping/waste

Stack errands together so your not wasting bus/diesel on multiplayer trips

Dust and bleed your radiators to keep them working well.

Probably obvious but whatever you intend to save each month, transfer it straight away on payday, not at the end.

Transfer is to an 'awkward' account. I have used a 21-day saver account in PTSB - meaning I had to give 21 days' notice to access the funds. I save now in the credit union - I have no ATM card for this so I know I can't withdraw funds spur of the moment, and apart from online I can only access it during working hours.

Clothes - when I need clothes/runners, I shop a bit on sites like MandMdirect, GetTheLabel etc, and in store in TK Maxx - same brand names as high street shops and same quality.

Utilities - shop around with a view to switching every time you're out of contract. I know from working for one of them in the past, people are not arsed and just tend to let contracts roll to have hassle.

A lot of people tend to even let their car insurance roll over - I find this nuts, the disparity is some quotes is unbelievable. I contact plenty of providers in the weeks leading up to my renewal - it's time consuming, although easier now that it's all online forms - but I saved €200 this year on it by switching from my provider for the past 6 years.

TV packages can be grossly overpriced. There are more options - and not just the dodgy/illegal ones. Have a look at what channels you actually regularly watch. If it's mainly your RTE, Virgin, BBC, ITV, C4 etc, you may not need a Sky/Eir package and instead get a combo box with Freesat/Freeview & Saorview. No bills and perfectly legal. For those that watch sports only every now and again, the likes of NowTV do day/monthly passes for Sky Sports/BT. Broadband - check your typical monthly usage and see do you really need what you have, you could well be paying for usage and speeds you don't really need and could bring that bill down from a €60/70 package to a €35/40 package.

Well that's all I can think of for now!

The problem with any service provider in Ireland is that the more money you have the less things cost you

Car tax... pay in one lump sum is cheaper than 4 separate tax discs

Electricity and Gas

Pay by direct debit, paperless bills and get 30 % off the unit price

Pay via smart meter and it's more expensive

Car insurance ...you negotiate a great discounted price that goes back up if you dont pay in one go

I'm terrible with saving if I had money in my hand, we now use Revolut and I can budget my spending each week and it also has a savings (vault) where you can set your change from purchases to go, managed to save a fair bit in so far, just an idea

In my house the kids might turn it on to wash the dog in the summer

40 mins later when it sounds like a volcano I usually shout it

Do the old cylinders from the 80's switch themselves off

First step is to find exactly where your wasted money is going.

Set up Revolut and use only Revolute for every purchase for a month.

Then look at your monthly stats to see exactly where your money is going.

In general, most people have no idea where money is being wasted.

Agree with you.

We had a talk a few times with friends and some did not realise how much money they have spent for the things they don't really need.

I think some banks also have the extra feature re income and expenses to monitor them.

I use Excel and do the shopping list for next week every Friday

Its lockdown, so I dont need n - pair of shoes, or a new dress. Many people became addicted from online shopping.

We need savings for the future event as we do not know what may happen tomorrow. Today we have well paid job, healthy and next week person may lose everything in the fire, car accident, etc

My granny used to say better to be prepared on every occasion than cry.

Mr BogM a few great tips have been given.

I can only add that managing finances now can save people lives with less drama. Of course we wouldnt bring all the money with us to grave so yes living the life as we want has to be applied there but with the dose of responsibility of thinking about future.

I have noticed lots of people live hedonistic live and when accident happens they blame everyone except themselves

There must be a balance
