Nothing major but talking to my son last night during reeling in the years and he's never robbed an orchard with his mates so doesn't know the thrill of it.
I had to explain how as kids we'd scope out the best tree's and apples, suss out if they have a dog, was there glass on the walls
Was there a clear escape route
I also had to explain how someone would keep sketch and how to tuck in your jumper into your jeans to get more apples in
When did kids turn honest
Did we all not rob orchards....did the younger people on here rob orchards

Nope, I never 'robbed' anything. What's the difference in robbing orchards and shop lifting? There isn't one, it's stealing.
How would you like it if the shoe was on the other foot?
This isn't a clever post pal! |

My disabled cousin had two apple trees in her garden and every year it cost her between £150-£250 to replace a damaged hedge or fence every time kids decided to rob her apples.
I'm the proud owner of a broken nose for stopping 3 of the feckers on one occasion. One of who pulled a flick knife on me.
And before you ask I was the same age as they were at the time. About 16. |

Honestly I did. A few of us planned it for weeks. Every Saturday for a few weeks we made a small hole in the ditch. The Saturday finally came and we were all geared up for it. All the planning was going to be worth while. So off we went. Crawled through the ditch and when we came out the other side there was the owner. She laughed and said take as much as we wanted. I think we were only around 10 at the time. Looking back on it now very funny.
Yes it was wrong before some say it was but we were kids. We had fun. Oh the memories |

What did ye do with the apples after OP?"
We used to eat as much as we could and throw the rest away
We'd walk for miles to find a good orchard to rob
You'd leave your house at 10 in the morning on a saturday and wouldnt go home till very late ....sure my parents never knew where I was half the time |

Robbing orchards is a gate way crime next thing you'll be smuggling red diesel
My Granny used to sell her apples to the local shop for extra money. My father in his infinite wisdom went robbing orchards thinking he would be a great help. He's in his 70s now and he still remembers the beating he got for it. He had to bring back all the apples. |

What's light hearted about stealing from others?? Seriously I'm lost! That's someone else's property and there's no justification. |

Sadly there's less and less orchards old fashion style which are fantastic habitats for all sorts of animals. So tricky enough for kids nowadays to nick an apple straight from the tree.
Been there, done that, no apple, pear or cherry that tastes nicer. |

Yes it's somebody's property but that was half the fun
We weren't breaking into houses or cars just divilment and yes it must have seriously annoyed the owners.
I can still point out the houses near my parents that had the best tree's
One house that was miles away is now close to where I live now and I can't belive I'd walk that far for apples

Yep,a few around my way when I was growing up! I used to get a serious knot in my stomach as we went over the wall! But my god those apples were gorgeous!! Almost got caught a few times and nearly shit myself when chased! Its a miracle I never progressed to more lucrative crimes like banks and building societies... |

It starts with robbing Orchards. It's a slippery slope from there let me warn ye...
Then you start taping the odd song or two off the radio.
A little improvement in Technology as you hit 13/14 your on Limewire downloading the latest Gigi D'Agostino single. Putting it on a CD.
15/16 you get a little more curious...But it's not enough, you want to get back to that nostalgic feeling of having what you stole in your hands. The young adolescent inside of you wants more.
You start taking the odd Beer Dior from the fridge, they wont miss one you say. But it's always more than one... You get curious to find out what the hard liquor is like, you take a sip of the vodka hidden in the back of your parents press.
Honestly you hate the taste, but you love the thrill of it more than youll ever love the taste.
You're lying to yourself at this stage, as you go to rob another bit, only the figure out there basically 3 old dusty bottle of 10 parts water and 1 part vodka.
Feeling half proud and half ashamed, knowing you shouldn't have got this far, you think how far can I take this feeling one last time.
Next thing you know your sitting in the driver seat of your parents 02 Ford Mondeo, doing donuts in a field full of nothing but cowshite, blaring the burned CD of Gigi D'Agostima L'amour Toujours you got from Limewire all those years back. You've peaked.
Waking up the next morning filling up with utter shame, you feel a little nostalgic about the apples and the orchard and your mildly Christian upbringing and the thoughts of sin.
And you think to yourself shor didn't Adam an Eve eat the forbidden fruit, isn't it what it's all about.

Yes there was a couple of small orchards near us and a few lone trees dotted around.
To totally shock the people who have "never stolen", we used to hide in the bushes at the golf course and wait for golfers to tee off, then we would run out rob the balls off the fairway and run back into the fields. |

There was a field with cooking apple trees behind us when I was a kid. Not strictly an orchard but I was often sent in to get apples for the delicious pies my mother baked.
I don’t think I ever saw the owners actually picking anything.... |

In the way to primary school (4km walk) there were a few orchards and kids were allowed to bring as many fruit as they want but only from the ground. There have been consequences and only one of my cousins was brave to rob the apples from the tree.
In the villages everybody knows each other and we have learnt our lesson very early
Parents may don't realise what their kids have done but they have been informed same day or day after by neighbours |

Sure you could stick in the tape, start loading the game, head out for a couple of hours and by the time you were back Beachhead or Daley Thompson’s Decathlon may (or may not) have loaded
If you were kept in you had to listen to it screech all the way through.... |

Same in Dublin ...dirty mags were a form of currency...were they sold in the shops in the north because we didn't have them in the south ...anyone going to England brought home an Argos catalogue and a copy of Mayfair |

Yes there was one right accross the road from my house. We used to climb the wall get in grab an apple or two then struggle to get back our quick lol. I remember getting caught one time and having to say sorry. And then not even eating the apples in the fruit bowl in the kitchen at home. There was some special about the orchard apples the were sweet like granny smith apples. The good old days i was always a naughty girl lol. |

I'm not sure now if I should admit to the shockingly criminal behaviour this autumn of gathering blackberries, sloes, rosehips, gooseberries, damsons and crab apples from the hedgerows which are by extension the property of the farmers on whose land they border...
Whilst we're confessing, I also gather wild garlic when it's in season. And elderflower.
And I used the big bag of freshly dug parsnips that was anonymously left on my doorstep a couple of years ago. I'm sure my handling of (probably) stolen goods will be equally frowned upon |

"My disabled cousin had two apple trees in her garden and every year it cost her between £150-£250 to replace a damaged hedge or fence every time kids decided to rob her apples.
I'm the proud owner of a broken nose for stopping 3 of the feckers on one occasion. One of who pulled a flick knife on me.
And before you ask I was the same age as they were at the time. About 16.
I don’t think that kind of behaviour falls in the same category as a couple of ten twelve year olds legging it with a jumper full of apples....
I'm sure you'll forgive me if I don't see the difference. "
Exactly. Everyone 'just taking a jumper full of apples' 2-3 days a week all season. Soon adds up. But no consideration given to the owner, if someone was getting chased for it by then it was clearly was a big deal to them. Hardly harmless.
Let's face it, what would you pay for a jumper full of apples in a fruit and veg shop? Now if you were to walk into tescos and try to walk out with a 2 litre bottle of diet and a multipack of crisps without paying you'd get done for shop lifting!
What exactly is the difference? Stealing and damage to property! Dress it down however you want. But that mentality is why government is a joke, your health care system is a mess and you're bailed out and propped up by Europe constantly. "ah lads sure it's just a bit of craic". |

Our health system is a mess ? We are propped up by Europe constantly ?
You live in 6 counties that have been propped up by Westminster since it's inception and couldn't support itself even if it wanted to. The NHS is just as much a shot show as ours but don't worry your leaders in London will sell it off and then the race to the bottom will begin soon then we will see who's is worse |

"Theres an apple farm outside cahir down here"
Yeah we go camping there every year. The owners said the kids weren’t to help themselves to the apples but a few days later, he showed them all how they cold get in and out with their pockets full of apples.
It’s a rite of passage, I did it once. And it was expected to happen, regardless of the opinion of Grinch’s. |

And whys that? . Elaborate? because Im pretty sure they're fed up of the same dozen or so profiles talking the same crap day in day out.
So the moral of this thread it would seem is stealing and damaging the property of others is a rite of passage in every young Irish persons life?
Is it any wonder people won't adhere to covid restrictions and guidelines and why we are in another lockdown? |

Nah I don't need that. I knew that already, look at your government! Look at the shabby state of your healthcare system! Is it?? It's the same thing, ignoring restrictions and the law, disregard for how it might impact on others. And being selfish and ignorant and deluded enough to think you can do what you want. |

I'm sure this started out as a rite of passage thread but like most threads it goes off on a different tangent.
I can only speak from personal experience which seems to be the other side of the coin to most on here.
To expand on my earlier post, my disabled cousin had no interest in the apple trees and never picked a single one. She was more than happy if others wanted the apples and even put a sign on the gate asking anyone who was taking the apples to please use the gate and access the garden that way.
The issue was that no one ever did so it became about how much damage they could do getting through the fence and hedge every time. The apples were irrelevant
And no I don't agree with the over the top comments being made here but if someone has to pull a knife and create havoc over a few apples it's a long way from collecting herbs from a hedgerow. |

By people you mean most of the regular forum posters on here? Haha I couldn't be bothered to speak to these people if I ever encountered them in reality so I'm certainly not going to post here just to make small talk ans tell them what I had for breakfast.
I think you hit the nail on the head though, it seems people post merely to see how well others respond as you put it. Hence the reason for so many absolute dross threads. |

No I mean the ones who say don't post because of regular posters.
There's plenty on here who post who I have zero interest in interacting with or meeting with at any stage in the future. Even some whose threads I may post in. But it doesn't mean I go and try and demean them at every opportunity either.

"Yes there was a couple of small orchards near us and a few lone trees dotted around.
To totally shock the people who have "never stolen", we used to hide in the bushes at the golf course and wait for golfers to tee off, then we would run out rob the balls off the fairway and run back into the fields."

Your first kiss ,Learning to open a bra, going to your first disco, robbing an orchard, driving a honda 50,bunking off mass, drinking in the fields, shoplifting, shaving and using your dads aftershave, your first fight.
Going into town with your mates on the bus ,getting into an over 15's film
Getting out of the house early on a summers morning and only coming home very late
Reading dirty magazines that were passed around even when some of the pages were stuck together
Playing football on the roads cause there was no traffic
Going on family holidays in a tent to courtown
All perfectly normal things myself and most people did at some time or other as teens
If you don't like any of them,or you didnt do any of them thats fine too.
But to make the leap from that to the way the country is now ....just wow

It's not a leap it's merely applying the same principles albeit on a much larger scale.
I havent heard you admit outright yet that you regularly stole from others and damaged their property and that despite that you're on here making out that that's OK as it was a rite of passage and dressing it up as nothing.
In some instances these orchards may have been a livelihood, they may have been for extra cash flow in times when money wasn't so plentiful for cloths and shoes for the kids. Or they may simply have been the pride and hard work of the owners. Whatever the case it doesn't matter. You havent and still don't acknowledge that you were wrong and being a kid was no excuse. You stole from these people.
Are you going to keep talking around it or admit to it? And in a modern era with inflation and the price of fruit in say Marks and Spencers these days what would such stealing and or damage to property equate to? Shop lifting?
By still saying it's OK it shows your mentality. And the mentality is everything thats wrong and has been wrong with your government for generations. The mentality that self serves and to see what they can get away with personally. |

It’s not just Irish kids, I guess that’s why our own government and NHS are a mess and we’re constantly bailed out by Europe
If only people realised it was a simple solution, Stop Kids Stealing Apples, the solution to all problems "

Exactly. Everyone 'just taking a jumper full of apples' 2-3 days a week all season. Soon adds up. But no consideration given to the owner, if someone was getting chased for it by then it was clearly was a big deal to them. Hardly harmless.

I knew two lads that used to rob the same orchard all the time. 1 was called Fuck Off and the other was called Manners. They were in the orchard 1 Sat as usual and Manners climbed the tree and was throwing apples down to Fuck Off. They were so busy they didnt notice the farmer sneaking up from behind through the trees next thing he pounced and grabbed 1 of them by the scruff of the neck shaking him about shooting "I got you now you little shite!" Then the farmer asked him what's your name to which his response was "Fuck Off", the shocked farmer gasped and asked where your manners? To which Fuck Off replied "up the tree pickin apples" |

So all problems in all countries appear to have come down to kids stealing apples. My word this world is quite simple when you realise the cause rather than the cure.
How do you like them apples? |
