I worked right through the first lockdown.. My job is classed as farm work so it's essential.. Construction was allowed go ahead for a few weeks then they shut it down completely.. I'd say the same will happen again. |

"Talk of shutting construction sites down now.. Don't like how they can't seem to make a decision.. they don't know what to do sure. "
Relaxing the lockdown before Christmas was the daftest thing ever done.. Pubs and restaurants were packed..people had a normal christmas... Christmas should have been cancelled.. We pay for it now for next 2 months at least |

I was in a few restaurants. every one of them followed guidelines to a tee but the thing with covid, everything u do runs a risk but all they were trying to do was move on with life. opening shops 3 weeks prior to Xmas was banannas and over Xmas, the most festive period of the year, the biggest component to huge cases was house parties. it was always going to happen |

" yep. they were trying to give people an Xmas. I remember going into level 5, end of October, martin said they were doing it so people could have somewhat of an Xmas. |

"Did they make a clear choice between, people having a somewhat normal Christmas, and trying their best to curb the spread of the virus, in you opinion. " i personally think they never expected numbers to go like they have. alot of people were off over Xmas. they closed gastros Xmas eve. I'd say shopping in lead up to Xmas, people coming home for Xmas and house parties made the thing soar.

" Exactly, beggars belief why they did, they could've just kept it shut and blamed it on Nphet.

I live in a very rural part of the country and on Christmas Eve, 3 pubs within a 3 mile radius of my house had massive lock ins. People went to the pubs in droves, partied for hours, spread the virus and brought it home to their families. I know this cause everyone in my locality know it and the majority of one village have the virus and most aren't even able to get tested because they are already recognised as close contacts of a positive case and are therefore being refused a test.
Its my belief that this is the major contributor. I've a business contact who picked up the virus in a lock in and he's ashamed that he put his elderly parents family at risk over Christmas. He is extremely ill himself at the moment.
The vast majority of people in these lock ins locally were male and a large proportion of them from the building trade too. They now find themselves out of business and maybe for longer than the short term.
We have a country full of neanderthal muppets.
Same crew were in the pubs after the county finals and we know how that kicked off cases from September.
Its a fucking disgrace.

they got what they deserved then..anybody who went to a pub when lockdown was relaxed is an idiot asking for trouble as if the virus knows not to spread when lockdowns end..I drove past a few pubs in my locality before christmas..packed to the rafters..nobody seems to care anymore |

I'd say lockins are happening and sheebeens around the whole country. add house parties to this in their droves over Xmas and cases were bound to load. I feel sorry for restaurant owners and publicans when it was allowed, the majority would run their premises in the required manner. its like workplaces. I bet there is some workplaces doing fuck all. I know some lads living with extremely vulnerable folk and having to go too work as their premises is open. they can't just opt off and take the PUP payment. |

"And some of us don't have any choice but to work, as we can't get any pup or payment of any kind
Just wondering who doesnt qualify for the payment" 1, as far as I'm aware are people who are nervous about going to work. You can't just decide you want to stay at home and get the PUP payment |

Yes, thats it. You don't qualify unless deemed to have lost your employment due to covid. And having been overseas prior to this for the past few years would not have the required prsi contributions. |

Are you sure about who doesn't qualify
I worked with about 50 students from India and Pakistan that only arrived in the country last September to study in colleges
They started work in January and could only work for 10 or 15 hrs a week which worked out between €100 and €150 a week
When they were let go in March they all got the pup payment and then left the country when college finished as they had paid rent and fee's in advance
They were getting the weekly payment of €350 and loved it |
