Free HIV Self-Test
Jump to: Newest in thread
Hey Fab fam, just found out that HIV Ireland are providing free HIV self-tests by post at the moment.
The scheme is open to people of all genders and orientations, which is very much welcome for our community as these schemes are often aimed at men who have sex with men only.
It takes two minutes to order your test and apparently it will be delivered to your home within 5 days, and once you administer the test you get results in 15 minutes.
The website is...

Tbh, unless you think you have recently been exposed specifically to HIV or aren't using condoms, I couldn't see much point in having this test done in isolation. It's not the most common STI. |

I'm actually kind of impressed you managed to come up with something negative to say about FREE STI TESTING. |

I can see people getting the test done, mentally ticking the STI test box, and not bothering about the others.
Also, you can test negative after exposure yet still have contracted HIV, a re-test would be needed three months later. |

Was listening to a radio programme recently which stated that there was a significant increase in the numbers of h I v diagnosis reported to the h s e in the first 2 quarters of 2020 and the largest increase was seen in 30 to 50 yr old heterosexuals. Never assume that h I v is for others and not you! Get tested regularly if your sexually active. |

And discuss your lifestyle with a health professional so they can assess your risk of contracting different diseases. |

So order the test kit and have it to hand if you do find out you have been at risk, why's it a problem to have one on standby? |

I can't foresee a situation where this happened, and I get tested regularly at my GP as it stands, testing to me is a routine healthcare policy |

I'd say those tests have a limited shelf life, so just keep that in mind. |

Well this was eye opening on lots of fronts.
Anyone who genuinely feels that their actions or lifestyle means that they need tested for HIV on a regular basis needs to wise up, take a look at themselves, clean up their act and get the f@&k off this site and leave the rest of us to.
By all means regular common stds screening, but seriously HIV.

Being tested to be safe??? From HIV?? Explain me how being tested makes you safe? By the time you have it, it's incurable and you shouldnt be meeting anyone without informing them you have an incurable STD!!
What part of that is so hard to grasp?? My point is if you lead a lifestyle that means you need tested for HIV regularly then you are merely wreckless and subjecting every single person you meet to your wrecklessness as well.
How is getting tested being safe?? seriously. |

They don't but if for instance they feel they need to be tested for HIV regularly then they are admitting to themselves that the lifestyle they lead means that they justifiably require HIV testing regularly. Perhaps they should have to declare on here thag owing to my lifestyle I need tested for HIV every 3 months?? Better still put it on their life insurance or mortgage application and see who wants to touch them with a barge pole and it really shouldnt be much different on here. |

But realistically.. Are you not better to be tested just in case than not at all?
Personally id prefer a partner to cover everything and be safer going forward rather than an 'oh well i didn't think id catch that'? I don't see how you can view someone being safe as a negative thing? |

Firstly, what constitutes "regular" testing depends on a number of things; their sexual activity, their want for peace of mind, transparency or perhaps even simply what they see as common sense.
It's recommended that most, with an average sex life and sexual partners, are tested for sexually transmitted infections once every six months. Anything more than that with regards to partners and activity it increases to once every three months.
So between either twice or four times a year. That's deemed traditional "regular" testing for what are seen as the more common form of STIs. Given that symptoms of HIV may not be presentable for weeks, months, even years after infection I fail to see how either of those recommendations are shameful; in fact HIV screening is recommended once a year, a minimum recommendation that is less frequent than other STI tests.
The only ignorance on display is that of your acceptance or understanding of HIV itself. It's no different to any other sexually transmitted infection in that it can be contracted by both oral and penetrative sex; yes, of course, whilst either is unprotected.
Yes, the demographics show that men may be more at risk (in particular men who engage in sexual activity with other men) and the overall risk grows exponentially with unprotected sex but even having more than one sexual partner a year increases the risk of infection.
For a disease that can be contracted in multiple ways, like any other STI, and can also delay the signs of any symptoms or positive results by months if not a year I don't see how regular testing of once a year to potentially four times a year is shameful. As sexual health check ups for more common STIs are recommended just as frequently, if not more so. |

First off, you can wear a condom and still get HIV. You're on a site for sexually active people, and it's best they get tested for their benefit and that of others.
You can have HIV for quite a while and have NO symptoms. If you leave it a while it can get serious, and become lift threatening, but if found close it can be easily treatable and you can live a normal life.
It's healthy getting tested and should be applauded. I practice safe sex but still get tested regularly, I would hate to have something and then pass it on, whether it's something small or something like HIV. Condoms tear, or anything can happen.
There's no need to judge anyone's lifestyle choices. |

One shouldn’t assume contracting HIV is an indication of someone’s “lifestyle”. You could get HIV from a blood transfusion, have sex with one person and pass it on. HIV doesn’t mean you’re irresponsible or promiscuous. If you’re sexually active it’s prudent to get tested to protect your health and the health of others. If you’re exposed to any STI, you may have been exposed to HIV. It’s estimated that there are 900 people living in Ireland with HIV who don’t know they have it. Between 400 and 500 people are now diagnosed annually here. So, testing can only be a good thing. |

Your post is not fact based and you've no idea of my understanding of HIV.
If you want to look at the guidelines and recommendations let's take official ones from the nations healyh protection agency the CDC shall we??
1 all adults and adolescents 13-64 should be tested for HIV once.
2. All sexually active women under 25 and those over 25 sexually active and with multiple partners or a partner who has had an std should be screened for gonorrhoea and chlamydia once a year.
3.all pregnant women should be tested for HIV syphyllis and hepatitis b early in pregnancy.
4.all sexually active gay and bisexual men should be tested once a year for syphyllis gonorrhoea and chlamydia. Those with multiple or anonymous partners should be tested more frequently ie 3-6 months.
5.sexually active or gay men could benefit from more frequent HIV testing ie 3-6 months.
6.anyone who has unsafe sex or shares needles for iv drug injection should get tested for HIV at least one a year.
Those are official guidelines.
People can decide what bracket they see themselves in.
That folks is my point about the difference in frequency of testing for other stds and HIV.
Seems like I'm the one with the understanding and it's gone way over some people's heads. |

How do I look silly? I countered made up recommendations with official recommendations. I didn't say they were my own. But my point is I produced official guidelines and figures to support what I way saying and not merely made something up to keep my I'll informed friends happy on this thread.
And your point is???
The USA has a higher incidence of HIV than the UK so if anything they should recommend more frequent HIV testing for heterosexual males and females practising unsafe sex than once a year.
Thus supporting my original point. If its lost on you at this stage, it's lost on you, I can't help you there. |

Why's that then? Do they do unsafe sex differently?
And as if to emphasise it further they have a slightly higher incidence of hiv in their population so youd expect them to recommend hiv testing more frequently than once a year for unsafe sexual practice or iv drug abuse if they thought there was any merit in it.
Now I'll reiterate my point, anyone to thinks they need to be tested any more frequently than that for HIV needs to rethink their lifestyle choices. |

The way I look at this is. I have a coil but I still practice safe sex as both a way to lower my risk of pregnancy and catching an sti. I also get tested a few times a year. It is all part of me having a full knowledge of my own health. You don't need to be engaging in especially risky behaviour to get tested regularly. |

Woah. Some strange thoughts expressed here. All I know is I was really pleased when SH:24 started offering free tests in my area. Mainly due to Covid I think and them not wanting people to attend clinics in person.
At well over £ 100 without them being free it's one silver lining from covid. Makes you appreciate how much all this testing must be costing our health services. |

No one is saying not to get tested.
What I said was if any individual genuinely needs tested regularly for HIV then they are engaging in high risk and wreckless behaviour.
The HIV test is 97% sensitive 3 months after exposure. So anyone anyone getting random HIV tests for screening, a negative test is only 97% accurate if you have abstained from all potential exposures for the preceding 3 months, ie no risky sexual encounters.
And even then there's still a 3% chance you could have it.
So I'm assuming that all white knights and the cavalry on here wanting peace of mind regarding their HIV status, when they have testing done abstain from sex or any exposures for at least 3 months beforehand? Otherwise their test result is inaccurate and they are still potentially exposing others.

If you read my post you'll see that's exactly what I said, "when you take up a new job".
And you shouldnt be at any increased risk if you follow proper procedure, that's not why you are tested. You are tested to ensure you are not a risk to any patient or other staff member of you needle stick them accidentally and contaminant them with your blood.
So you didn't read my post correctly!

The one where you said the CDC is out nations health protection agency?
Someday you'll be man enough to admit you're wrong about something; continuing to waste my time replying is only further facilitating you to take away from what was a good post about free health screening.
Feel free to carry on with the insults, I rate the opinion of the shite on the bottom of my shoe higher than anything else you've got to say, and tbh it's really not that smart |

When I'm wrong I'll admit it. It has be a good thread, I agree, it has highlighted the lack of understanding of HIV testing and the lack of awareness of the "window period" with HIV and relevance to testing and frequency of it.
It has also highlighted once again the members of the little clique on here and showcased how they will choose to row in behind their forum buddys rather than stopping and taking stock of facts.
Given how you have misread my posts and misinterpreted aspects of them and also the fact that it appears you've now stepped in shite that's on the sole of your shoe perhaps you need your eyes tested? I mean like no one needs to be stepping in shite. Good luck. |

"Hey Fab fam, just found out that HIV Ireland are providing free HIV self-tests by post at the moment.
The scheme is open to people of all genders and orientations, which is very much welcome for our community as these schemes are often aimed at men who have sex with men only.
It takes two minutes to order your test and apparently it will be delivered to your home within 5 days, and once you administer the test you get results in 15 minutes.
The website is...
selftest.hivireland.ie
"
Anyway...HIV are doing free self testing by post for anyone that is interested |

"Hang on.... I'm in a clique??? Why the fuck didn't I know about this?? Oh hang on you meant my hubbie... Yea me and him go way back.... " I think it's a sign of fighting a losing battle when people resort to mentioning white knights and cliques
