Just looking at social media (and yes, even the forums here at times as well...) and wondering
With certain topics, people seem to become completely polarised and steadfast in their current beliefs with little consideration for anything outside of that...
So...
are we now living in a culture where it's one side against another on a topic with the intention of "winning" an arguement at all costs NO MATTER WHAT!
OR...
Is there such a thing as a good natured-good hearted debate where we chat about something, have the craic and humour ![](/icons/s/2/cute.gif) and maybe consider and see the world from someone else's perpective?
Just wondering ![](/icons/s/neutral.gif) |

There's a perception on the Irish forum that its only on this forum that arguments break out over absolutely anything.
However there's posts along the same line as yours on the UK forum saying the same thing.
Maybe it's everywhere due to the virus
Also wondering how long it is before posters start arguing on this thread

I listening to a very similar topic very recently on the Radio.
The general just for advice given out by the speaker was:
"Just because you disagree and you're offended by something (post/topic/lifestyle choice) doesn't mean you're right"
Thought it really hit the nail on the head with the culture that has become the normal now. |

Social media is an oxymoron because it's about as antisocial as you can get
I agree with BM that ignorant people aren't just to be found on the Irish forums.
There just aren't enough phoneboxes around these days for people to start a fight in so they look for alternatives.
In a face to face debate those who resort to shouting the loudest have no interest in other opinions and once they've reached the point of typing in capital letters in an online debate you know anything you say is pointless after that.
Beligerance is usually an inherited trait so it's difficult for them to change their behaviour. |

Have been guilty of being a smart ass (forgive the pun) and getting the last word in mainly because on the forums here, you're well aware that there's others reading the thread and neither person wants to lose face or look bad and that's understandable
...whereas if it was me and you sitting in a pub (Ahhh them be da days, them be!) talking about an eclectic mix of topics where we'd just chat back and forth, listening and talking, respecting the others opinion and having the craic
...so maybe it's the public platform that brings out this competitive side that's normally latent in casual conversation for most of us

When I see kids who I grew up now as a 45 year old tr0ll in F@ceb00k makes you wonder about people's definition of "fun"
Just think that lively good natured debates where we keep an open mind and yes, have the craic might be a better tact going forward ...especially over the next 6 weeks ![](/icons/thumb_up.png) |

Just as a side note to the same conversation
I wonder are there any Irish moderators that actually moderate our forum.
I sometimes think that whoever moderates this forum doesn't get us
( I know not everyone is Irish but ye can't all be blessed )
I know they are protecting the site and are unpaid volunteers but sometimes people start a thread for a bit of craic and it just gets deleted and its flying along ...even argumentative but thats what we do

My comment was tongue in cheek, you know! Part of the problem is that people take irrelevant stuff too seriously, or develop an intense dislike of a total stranger they've never even met, nowt so queer as folk. |

This happens in literally every online community on every website on earth. It's not exclusive to Fab by a long shot! |

I don't see much arguing on this forum.. The mods do a great job knocking it on the head if and when it starts.. I was on a forum years ago which was very poorly moderated and the amount of trolling was unbelievable.. Flame wars.. Insults abuse you name it.. Offenders would be banned then back again the next day under a new profile to start the whole thing off again.. Sure it was entertaining but it got downright nasty at times.. Said forum is like a ghost town now.. The amount of posts made in 1 week can be counted on 1 hand.. They tightened up the rules and everyone became bored and left because they couldn't troll anymore ![](/icons/s/biggrin.gif) |

There are those you can engage in debates or conversations with and you know you'll have a brilliant open minded one , then there are those that you don't engage in debates or conversations with because it's totally futile as they are never wrong and try to ram their opinion down your throat and are condesending in their point of view , so as you go through life you find those that you know they will always give a great point of view and banter and would actually look forward to it . |
