Yes, it is a well known term.

A lot of POC wish the term would die in a fire. Others don't mind & self identify this way.

Either way, as white people we should be mindful that many find it harmful so maybe we should be considerate of that rather than arguing that some don't mind. Path of least harm.

Personally I think it is fetishizing people based on a single attribute and this can be dehumanising. Much the same way as Trans chasers or BBW chasers or foot fetishists focus on a specific attribute rather than the whole person.

Didn't mean to start a whole new outrage.

BIPOC = Black, Indigenous & People Of Colour (in geographical areas with discriminated against indigenous folk eg the Americas, Australia)

POC = People Of Colour (probably better suited for Ireland & UK but that could spark a whole other argument about indigenous Celts - those damn Vikings, Romans & Angles)

It's an inclusive term that recognises that racism isn't just against black people, and seems to be more acceptable by various communities than BAME (Black, asian & minority ethnic)

While the thread was specifically about black men, I maybe should have stayed specific.

Also, not suggesting anyone else has to use them terms, just explaining my understanding of them

Peace.

Woke people don't make up terminology to refer to marginalised groups. They listen to those groups and use the terminology they are asked to use. So yes, many Black people and other people of colour do use POC.

POC as a term is starting to fall out of favour at the moment though, as most non-white people prefer to be acknowledged in their own right (as Black, Asian, Hispanic, Latinx, Indigenous, etc) rather than lumped in together. But it's a useful shorthand when we're talking about 'people who aren't white'. Much like we'd use LGBTQ+ to refer to 'people who aren't straight and cisgender'.

I worked in South Africa for a long time and the "People of Colour" term was used by the POC I worked and socialised with, and the term black was used by the black dudes I worked and socialised with. So they both seem to be acceptable terms, by SA standards anyway. May theres some South Africans on fab that could explain??

To me the use of "people of colour" is annoying, if black people are being called people of colour, what about white people or brown people, are they colourless?

LGBTQ is not a race or ethnicity, so they could be called whatever they want to be associated with, there is no comparison.

"To me the use of "people of colour" is annoying, if black people are being called people of colour, what about white people or brown people, are they colourless?"

As has been explained, at least twice now, it's an inclusive short hand for all people who are marginalised & discriminated against based on their ethnicity - black people are included in the term, as are other races. White people aren't included as we generally aren't discriminated against based on the he colour of our skin.

But sure, the white dude being annoyed about it is all that matters. No need to modify language or behaviour to make spaces (even online spaces) more welcoming & inclusive to everyone.

You are obviously entrenched in your opinion so I'm going to leave it there.

naughty valley

what a waste of time . A human is a human regardless the concentration of skin color pigments . In South America i count as white , in Ireland as PoC in Central Europe as mixed ...

Neither term is inclusive if the the dominant color is different .... that said , what does it matter . Don’t be scared of my skin color ....be scared of my abilities - or be attracted to it . I would have my traits even if you are blind and couldn’t see any color at all
