Genuine question to people who send 'hi' and 'hello' one-word first messages. This is without any prior contact (winks etc). Why don't you make more of an effort? Do you hope to get an actual reply or are you just sending it out of boredom? |

"Totally agree if sending needs to put a bit of thought into message not just one line .if you want reply needs say something that's catches your attention and makes it interesting. "
... and then they start threads here complaining about not getting replies |

Isn't that what the Hotlist is for? That way you can secretly perve for a while without ruining everything with that first 'hi' |

Well it's better than "do you want a big dick".
Let's put it this way if you were out at night and a guy spoke to you at a bar and said " hey how are you" what would your reply be?
Whereas if he turned around and said "I've a big dick"
Guess everyone has different opinions on what's a good message or not |

We don’t reply to one word intro messages as a rule - a rule we sometimes break depending on desirability of the couple - we acknowledge the hypocrisy and we do feel a bit hollow in those circumstances.
We have been known to reply to newbies advising them, politely, of the general antipathy towards one word messages but our enthusiasm for this has waned also as communication skills and etiquette ain’t just something you learn after joining this site. |

This is a good point, but I suppose the problem is when you've a few of this hi how are you messages every day or the how's lockdown treating you it just gets boring. |

Oh don't worry I've got a few of them messages and they drive me daft as I have worked all through lockdown. But as I've said I'd sooner get hi how are you than a post about his big dick. |

I'm so glad you said "people" and not just guys. As it's not just the male of the species that has this aversion to a somewhat interesting first msg. Hi or hello or hey. It's like.... is like to talk to you but not that much that I have to put some effort in. I'm a woman after all and you should count yourself lucky that I'm messaging you.
Dare I say double standards ??? |

I have messaged first and it actually is not that easy to think of something interesting and unique to send to someone you don't have a clue about bar what you read in the profile. And yes all my messages have been answered but had I been a guy sending the same message to females I bet most have been deleted as they were pretty basic messages as I drew a complete blank as I tried to write it. |

Totally agree on that. We find that when we do reply to these messages, the convo quickly fizzles out anyway, so now we don't bother replying to them. |

Surely after reading a person's profile you can come up with something to say in a first msg. Be it humour something serious or even their general location. As you girls always say.... just put some effort in and of course read the profiles. If you can't find sonething you say after that then maybe you need to rethink your strategy.
Just saying.... for a friend |

In a way.. its beneficial, you get an early insight into the person and their level of effort which will likely cross over into other things...
Could you imagine the disaster it would be if the time wasters were actually smart enough to make themselves seem genuine?
The place would be anarchy... for me, im happy for them to continue with said messages... let the difference in authenticity be clear to see, dont make it harder on yourself lol |

Truthfully, if they open with a "Hi" and we like the look of their profile then we'll usually reply. If conversation develops over a few messages then it's all good. If it's like pulling teeth then we're likely to bail. |

Hi
Lol...sorry, had to...
I wonder how many of those "hi" introductory message people will actually reply to this question...
My feeling is that those who genuinely post in the Forum will try to make more of an effort in their introduction - and yes, it is difficult to come up with something original to grab the attention of that profile, as everyone has a preference on how they like to be approached as we can see from the answers in this thread!
I have approached people through my singles profile as well as my couples profile, and always give a unique introduction on what I'm about, what attracted me to the profile and generally try to add some humour - which is usually easy enough as I tend to go for the more "original" profile with either funky pics or a decent original text or combination of both.
As to the "hi" messages I get, usually I put them off with "not interested" (yes, I generally try to reply to everyone - my filters are set quite tight so not a huge number of messages to get through ), or if they have an interesting profile, something that catches my eye, then I'll entertain to see if it can go anywhere, chat wise...
