Well you can catch Vulpix in Silver which is a personal favourite of mine, but overall the sprite design is better in Gold.

However, if you are going for Pokémon Gen 2, then you may as well play Crystal. They really figured out how to utilise the capabilities of the Gameboy Color by the time Crystal came out.

If your planning on uploading a load of photos then gold otherwise silver is just fine.
