I would have faith that a vaccine is possible... but a likely worst case is that we need to updated vaccine each year for the likely strain that is prevalent in a particular year.. similar to the flu vaccine.

Vaccine and drugs free zone here. No one takes anything big pharma produces in my whole family. There are lot of natural remedies without harming the body like artificial ones.

I hope neither you or anyone in your family ever gets any serious illnesses like cancer or diabetes or one of the many things curable by modern medicne. "Big pharma" produce the drugs that would keep them/you alive.

Almost everything is "artificial". Almost everthing was made by someone somewhere.

Steve jobs' pancreatic cancer would have responded quite well to drugs. Hes dead now because of his herbal medicne.

Well put. Big pharma is real , no doubt. But the medication they produce works, and it does so well. The issue with big pharma is an American problem where they have excruciatingly high prices for every day medicine. If they produce a vaccine I'll take it.

I certainly wouldn't be in the first row..... a rushed vaccine... I'd wait and see and then decide. However if it's another one with aluminum adjuvants they can keep it, not going near it.

Based on current knowledge, No. Ive never had a flu shot and have a strong immune system. If some countries restrict my travel, i can live with that . You used to need a yellow card, a vaccination passport to visit certain countries. If you didnt get vaxxed you couldnt visit. Im not sure if it still applies.

I'm not anti-medication at all, but to assume that all medication "works" is really very naive. Many medications don't work. Most medications that do cause other problems as side effects, which is why most elderly people are on a dozen+ tablets a day. To take any new medication without first questioning it is very foolish in my opinion. 9/10 you'll probably end up taking it anyway, but at least you'll be aware of what you're putting into your body.

Also, the issue with Big Pharma is not an American one. It's a global one.

Oh you really messed up with that post!

Pancreatic cancer is one of the worst.

"survival rate is 20%, and the five-year rate is 7%"

Also, some people on this thread have had cancer and survived and healthy without any major pharmaceutical treatments, simply natural remedies.

My best friend got pancreatic cancer, caught early and went through the pharma/chemo route.

He's no longer with us.

Another friend got it, has been using herbal/traditional medicine and it's regressing. Doctors asking for specific, in depth details about what they are doing, because the doctors are ignorant of the "outside the norm" methods.

Please don't make such broad brush statements.

I have had cancer twice my dear. Without chemo. Im stil alive!

Diabetes? You can fix many things in your body by fasting, eating healthy food.

You are what you eat.

I trust natural medicine, Chinese, Ayurvedic.

These days people trust that drugs can save them, but in many cases its more damage to body than helping to heal.

Everyone is entitled to have own opinion and live their own lives as they want.

It depends on the diabetes they have.

Making claims that natural will help with everything is no different from people who will say that it doesn't help at all. And I'm talking from personal experience. When I was a child I was taken off my meds for a condition I have and put on natural remedies and I almost died. All because someone persuaded my parents pharmaceuticals were bad. I spent over a year being seriously ill until I ended up being admitted to hospital put back on my old meds and recovered.

I've also lost 2 friends who went the natural route after being diagnosed with cancer. I've family members who took conventional meds after being diagnosed and they are still alive and clear. Who knows what would have happened had they taken the opposite route.

Basically do what is right for you don't knock or belittle others for their beliefs.

Before the arrival of modern medicine, vaccine and antibiotics, the natural order was that a significant number of women died of infection after giving birth, the infant mortality rate was huge and many children died in early childhood due to diseases which are now almost forgotten in just a couple of generations.

That's what "natural" means, survival of the fittest, all great if you happen to be one of those, not so much if you're not, or a child whose immunity is not fully developed and who could easily succumb or have your health compromised long-term by diseases like polio, diphtheria, measles.

Disease and death are "natural".

How were they diagnosed with diabetes is wonder? Was it by modern medical testing using chemicals and drugs perhaps.. or did they read it in tea leaves or something. Did they use medical tests to see blood sugar levels? Did they use big pharma drugs to control it while they were using diet to reverse it? I'd say they more than likely did.

My mam had a saying....doctors differ and patients die....do whatever is right for you...big pharma...vicky phelan is one person I can think of that pharma produced drugs helped...without them she would be deceased...so yes pharma has a place...I can think of numerous family members I can think of that are in savage pain from arthritis...and instead of meds...I'd rather see them take plant based meds...so each to their own....if someone feels better after eating buttercups...then let them...dont knock them

I think nobody dismisses modern medicine and its achievements althogether. At the same time you cannot deny that alternative approaches can sometimes be the better solution than taking drugs. Drugs often fight the symptoms but don't cure the problem.

The two combined could be quite successful but unfortunately there's not enough money to be made in ie changing your diet.

Oh absolutely there are other approaches other than just drugs. GPs for example will regularly advise on diet and exercise. Drugs arent the only answer all the time.. but they ARE the only answer some of the time.

Plus people prefer the quick fix, long term change of diet and drinking/smoking habits and taking more exercise is pretty unappealing for many.

I agree it's a combination, do your research into both and make your choices. I can assure you there's plenty of profit margin for some alternative lifestyle purveyors too.

IF.. and it's a big If..

An effective vaccine is tested and made available, I will be getting it.

And I would go so far as to say that it should be Mandatory, like measles, bcg, mumps etc should be mandatory.

You should have a Qr code or similar to prove you have been vaccinated, and businesses, schools etc should be able to request this proof, and reserve the right to refuse entry without it.

And before anyone goes on about your rights, big pharma, etc, I will debate you.. Your rights do not extend to being allowed to infect people with comprised immune systems etc, and do NOT debate me if your source of information is Youtube, or Facebook.

Gotta say that while I believe vaccines to be one of the best human inventions since our species walked on 2 legs... i would be against mandatory vaccination. A persons body is their own to do with as they wish. Holding someone down and forcibly injecting them wouldn't be for me. By all means encourage vaccination by allowing shops/schools/any place or activity to exclude the unvaccinated.

Your idea of compulsory vaccination is as much opinion based as is my police state comment.

I'm no anti-vaxer, I'm very much pro regarding traditional vaccines such as polio or mmr, however I'd heavily oppose compulsory vaccination. It's a slippery slope. Who is going to decides what is safe, what is compulsory and where does it end? Who defines your 'facts and truth'? At least as it stands everyone is responsible for their own health and the risks involved of taking a vaccine or not.

Your argument of personal rights not extending as far as to infect other people with an compromised immune system isn't valid when there's a vaccine, if the latter are vaccinated they don't have to fear anything of a non vaccinated one, if they're not it's their own responsibility. Simple as that.

Oh and btw I can always abandon my phone, it's not part of me.

I am delighted to hear you are not an anti-vaxxer, but I must disagree, and here's why...Unfortunately where this is concerned it's the exactly the opposite to "everyone is responsible for their own health".. in this case of Coronavirus, everyone is now responsible for everyone else's health, so, also your point about immunocompromised people getting the vaccine is incorrect, and here's why.

By the very nature of being immunocompromised, cancer patients, newborns, people with auto immune issues etc, can't get the vaccine, as it would potentially kill them, so they have to depend on the rest of us (a min of 96% vaccinated) to acquire herd immunity for their protection, which is a point many do not understand.

We can all abandon our phones.. but everything you've ever done on it has been recorded and stored.. and we ALL gave that info up willingly.

Someone in this thread said we are all now responsible for every one else's health as well as our own.

That is a very sobering thought and I feel now I have a moral duty to take the vaccine.

Might try the flat 7 Up too.

There is no such thing as “artificial”. Once it can be produced it’s natural. Whether it is effective or not is a different matter. Vaccine deniers are a danger to society as they present a transmission route to vulnerable people who cannot take the vaccine for medical reasons. It is, at best, ignorant behaviour and, at worst, reckless and negligent.

Which is all well and good until you have somebody in your family who cant be vaccinated due to a health condition, or are too young. These people rely on enough of the population being covered to say safe. Its a social responsability in my eyes.

I work for big pharma and have been involved in the production of vaccines in the past and I know the level of attention to quality and every last detail that goes into developing and making vaccines so I’m a big believer in efficacy and safety particularly from a reputable big pharma company. They are subject to regular and routine audits by multiple regulatory authorities and have very robust quality procedures.

With respect it is this kind of divisive commentary that makes any kind of meaningful debate so difficult. There is no one better way. Not all illnesses are curable by natural remedies and some illnesses just aren’t curable at all.

"

Totally agree, have a family member that passed away from it, and went through the route, within less than 7 months she was gone.

I won't be getting it unless it's mandatory.

That's idiotic. Your claim is that lots of people die from pancreatic cancer therefore we should use herbal medicne rather than actual medicine.. is that right?"

I'm idiotic?

You said "I hope neither you or anyone in your family ever gets any serious illnesses like cancer" to someone who got cancer twice and survived through natural healing but I'm idiotic

Also, I never said lots of people die from pancreatic cancer. I said that the survival rates of those who do contract it is very low.

I know 2 people who have had it. One who went chemo route is dead and one who didn't and is still here.

I merely gave examples from my personal life and nowhere did I prescribe it for all. I said "some people " not all people.

I believe in modern medicine but am also open to natural remedies.

Call it Whatever Makes Me Better, I'll Take but I do try to refrain from making broadbrush statements that make me sound like an authority, or saying This is What You Should Do, unlike some.

My family, friends and I chosen better way.

4 different friends of mine have cured their diabetes through dietary change and natural healing remedies

Modern medical testing identified diabetes, in all cases. Tea leaves were strangely absent.

Big pharma drugs first route in 3 out of 4. All eventually went diet and natural remedies are in a better place, blood sugar levels back to normal, no injections required.

Two other friends sticking to big pharma, have not been successful with lifestyle changes and pissed off with needles.

Do me a favour? If you have a problem with me specifically, for some reason, pm me about it, or ignore my posts and we'll be good

A few months ago there were 50 to 75 deaths per day.

To put in perspective, thats 2 or 3 Omagh bombings, or 2 or 3 bl00dy Sunday Massacres daily. Now as a direct result of vaccines, there hasn't been a single death in weeks.

Even if you were guaranteed to feel very ill afterwards, I still think it's your civic duty to get vaccinated. Those who are not in a high risk catagory but still don't bother, are over-privileged freeloading sponges, no different in mentality than those who sit on the dole all their life because they couldn't be arsed contributing to society, because someone else can do it for them.

While I agree partially with that, there is also this... Which would mean many of the deaths you are using would possibly not be due to covid. Would you still have the same view?

That's not true at all. If all the vulnerable are vaccinated it means they won't get ill or die, also taking the pressure off the health system.

However, if everyone else ignores the reality of the virus it allows the virus to continue existing, thereby allowing mutations to develop. There is no guarantee that the vaccine will protect against those potential new variants.

How is it, over a year into a pandemic people still don't understand the simple basics of how vaccines work? It is impossible to vaccinate all the vulnerable, because some bodies simply will not take the vaccine, so we need to protect them by keeping the transmission rates in the community down.

Also, if the maximum number of healthy people are is vaccinated, it slows transmission which slows mutation rate. It gives us more time to develop vaccines on the new variations before they take over

Are you serious? In the UK there were 1000K a day, now it's practically zero withing a few months. And the decline coincided directly with when they started the rollout. Do you actually think the virus just naturally went away, coincidently with when the vaccine came out? You obviously have some other agenda that is blinding you to the obvious.

as a chap on the radio said last week. healthy immune systems in the large regard will fight the virus. id love to know how many even had the virus and didn't know.

"A few months ago there were 50 to 75 deaths per day.

Those who are not in a high risk catagory but still don't bother, are over-privileged freeloading sponges, no different in mentality than those who sit on the dole all their life because they couldn't be arsed contributing to society, because someone else can do it for them.

if all the vulnerable here are vaxed then it doesn't matter what the rest do. the vulnerable are vaxed and protected. thats the most important thing but I can see you needing a vaccine type passport to do alot of stuff. it's not mandatory but in another sense they want you getting it.

Sure remember at the start, you couldn't even get tested unless you were over 65, or to the point of hospitalisation. I'd say a serious number of people had it but just didn't know/ couldn't get a test.

Two members of my staff were really ill in November 19 with covid like symptoms. In early December 19 a family member had to take a week off work for the first time in her life due to illness with the same issues. Around that time I had a persistent cough and breathing issues.

That was before covid was ever mentioned but 18 months later none of us have ever been tested so who knows?

There are no deaths thanks to nature not the vaccine.

Yes I do because its a seasonal virus just like the influenza it replaced

Ah, so nobody died last summer then?

Oh wait.. "

People die all the time, just not from covid. Do you remember the great pandemic in the summer of 2018 when even more people died.

It's handy to be able to dismiss reality like that. The virus was with its last summer despite a fairly strict lockdown, and despite people like you and Trump telling us it was going to disappear overnight!

the reality lads is whatever happens you have to get on with life weather x y or z amount take/refuse the vaccine. there is a good chance we will have more mutations and have to live with covid like many other illnesses. it will be a while until vaccines are proven to work against all variants so you can't keep living in the what if scenario. out you go and get on with life.

My issue with this is that you seem to not be considering that the vulnerable in our society are also people, and those are the ones who will literally die if we don't all continue to make (increasingly less difficult) sacrifices.

If everyone simply ignores all precautions, people will die. That may not be real to you, or maybe it doesn't matter to you, but it matters to me and thankfully most others in our country which is why we've seen such a high level of adherence to regulations.

Not everyone can simply "go back to normal" because it's a matter of life and death for them. And it's fine that the rest of us must continue to make sacrifices to protect those people and allow them to also live their lives.

Plenty of nutjobs disputed we would get there though. Saying first it's masks, then travel, etc etc. Thinking it was the start of a New regime be be continued forever.. but they are a different kettle of fish.

I don't think we are miles behind either. If anything, we are actually miles ahead in terms of keeping out citizens alive.

"Have the daily number of covid cases gone down since start of roll out of the vaccine? 1st thing on news before roll out they always gave numbers, now never hear about cases on any media site "

The HSE IT breach meant reporting was missing for a couple of days. The figures are still reported every day on the news. The numbers have gone down but the most noticeable thing is the age profile of new cases when they publish that. The mean age has dropped dramatically since the vaccine started rolling out.

Not much of a change. But so far only the high risk people who are generally coocooning anyway have been fully vaccinated. Now that the main people spreading the disease: people who are going to work, school, meeting friends etc and are getting vaccinated, I'd say cases will fall. There hasn't been a death in the country in aver 2 weeks though which is a great achievement.

I'm not talking about that at all. were a good bit behind some other countries in terms of normality, what's open , what people can do etc but as I said we will get there and return to full normality hopefully soon.

"the reality lads is whatever happens you have to get on with life weather x y or z amount take/refuse the vaccine. there is a good chance we will have more mutations and have to live with covid like many other illnesses. it will be a while until vaccines are proven to work against all variants so you can't keep living in the what if scenario. out you go and get on with life.

Never stopped living my life. Just amended it. I mean go back to pre march 2020 life if u want. thats what has to happen.

so your motto, when the cohort programme is completed that people cannot go back to their normal lives that they had pre covid because the elderly might still die? do u want to continously living in the what if scenario for eg, what if this variant comes and vaccines don't work. my motto is vaccines are here, look at the positive, jab as many willing to take them and let people have the mother of all parties and resume living life like pre march last year.

you cannot expect people to keep putting their life on hold when the vaccine programme is complete. as I have said numerous times. u have to live with covid but live with it doing normal things, everything that you can do in life, holiday, party travel etc etc without covid and regulations been mentioned in everything u do. thats the life most long for.

"Covid19 vaccine when it comes out. Will you be getting it or refusing.

Answers yes for getting bit, no for refusing!"

I probably will get it, but that's my own personal preference.

City centre/Naas

Why do people comment on a year old thread and bring it up? There is a whole section of the forum for Covid talk.

"So why comment then"

Because someone posted to this thread which hadn't been used in a year and I wanted to know? Seems straightforward.
