Watched a programme on the tellybox last night about Turlough Hill ESB power plant
When we were about 12 the whole class went on a school trip there...about 30 messers acting the bollox running around the place ...no health and safety in those days
It got me wondering about school trips now a days compared to the past.
My kids school go skiing, or to India,or very fancy spots.
Where did you go on school trips ....somewhere shitty or decent
Did anyone actually go to Dublin on a trip
Do people still remember their school trips |

In primary school I was on two trips. The first was a day trip to Dublin to include Phoenix Park, National Museum and Kilmainham but the gaol was closed so I've never been in it. Also had a weekend camping in Donegal.
At secondary school we had a long weekend in a hostel in Wicklow and a weekend in London. That was as exciting as it got. I remember the 3 days in London included the ferry to Liverpool, a train to London accommodation, a tour of Wembley, 2 West end shows and a match at White Hart lane and it cost the enormous sum of £45. |

In primary school we went to Ardacrusha once too, I don't remember any other trips.
First year in secondary we went to Funderland (is that what it was called?) in Dublin, never had any more trips. My brother went to Rome in 4th year (different school), boy, was I jealous. |

Secondary school 5th or 6th class: students wanted to go to Amsterdam, for some mysterious reasons the teachers didn't, so we ended up in Vienna for a week, it was a fantastic and very memorable trip. |

No school trips in Primary School, lots of nature walks as lived in a rural village. Only trip went on in Secondary was to France in the 80's with only one teacher and his wife, 20 boys all hit the duty free on overnight ferry, as it was Halloween, there were 3 or four other schools on board, disco was packed with d*unken teenagers, everyone running around , until one fella, not my school, decided to walk on the outside railings, fell overboard never to be seen again. Boat circled around for a couple of hours, all sobered up fairly quickly. Was on the morning news in Ireland, teachers used the shops phone to call the schools, we carried on with the trip to Paris but will never forget that trip.

"Knock and the coca cola factory"
I always wanted to visit food factories as a kid and never got a chance.
Now I do engineering inspections in them and I'm still fascinated on how things are made.
I visit the plant that makes syrup for europe a lot and I could tell you how jacobs got the figs into the fig rolls |

From national school we went on a trip to Dublin, woohoo! We managed to get to the zoo, the national museum and the Dáil so we got to see reptiles in two places that day.
From secondary school we had an trip to the spring show in the rds in 4th year, now called 5th year, and a jolly day out just before the leaving cert that took in Rossnowlagh Beach in April, followed by a trip to the leisure centre in Enniskillen. Jesus, talk about tragic!
As was top be expected it ended up Wytham about half the class getting suspended for d*unkeness but was a bit of a laugh all the same, ish. |

I went to a Christian brothers school, so we were regularky brought to monasteries to see the delights of the religious life. In the church choir, we were brought to the wicklow mountains and forced to sing in the woods. Cringe memories. Our school trips to country towns were stopped as the lads robbed all around them. We were sick of sweets. When older we went to girls schools for debating competitions. There was a phalanx of brothers and nuns between us and the girls, so frustrating. We never won a debate. |
