1973 - Ireland joins European Economic Community
April 10, 1998. - Good Friday Agreement.
January 1, 2002 - change to Euro from Irish Punt.
And on a selfish note - January 15, 2001, the date I moved to Ireland for a few years to enjoy the Irish scene...

"Playboy was banned from the Irish top shelves until 1995. When censorship loosened, the magazine fetched £4.90 (and that was a weeks wages in punts back then as I was delivering newspapers then!! ) ...far more than it went for in the UK
HOWEVER... To mark its entry into the market, a celebratory one-off Irish issue was published
...Cailíní deasa!! "
I bought it myself and have it here somewhere. Mmmmm, Pamela Anderson! |

England may have had the royal wedding with Charles and Di... but on the 8th February 1986 we had Dinny & Miley's Wedding gracing every tv set in the country...
For anyone under 30, the sex tape they made was absolutely filth so best do not Google for it at all, at all |

January 1, 2002 was when the punt was withdrawn but the Euro was being used from January 1, 1999
(I had to look that up as I was sure I was using it before 2002 ) |

"May 1971 the womens liberation movement. That train was the start of sexual freedom for women in Ireland. "
July 31st 1973,removal of the marriage bar which meant women in the public sector no longer automatically lost their jobs on marriage. The private sector was still free to discriminate against women based on their marital status until forced to change by EU legislation in 1977, finally allowing all Irish women the legal right to financial independence. |

You weren't using it before 2002 unless you were forging it. ??
It existed only on paper until then. The Euro equivalent was written beside the punt value on various documents but there was no physical currency in circulation. |

I moved back to Ireland in May 1999.The introduction of the Euro as the currency definitely didn't happen until after that. |

Sadly, I lost touch with the rural shenanigans after moving abroad in 1987 |

YES! It was like the whole country winning the All-Ireland at once. A moment and a night I'll always remember and cherish. |

28 December 1918: Constance Markievicz is elected as the first female ever to the House of Commons.
She goes on to be Ireland's first female Minister and the second in Europe to hold a cabinet position.
I genuinely and firmly believe that her drive, independence and ambition lives with every Irish woman and this is a result of the advanced (for its time) approach that Brehon Law had on our attitude to gender in this fine country. |

Yes, she was an amazing woman. She helped ensure that Winston Churchill was defeated in a by-election in the UK.
Lissadell House outside Sligo is well worth a visit as there are some fascinating archives, photo's and the whole history of the Lady's life.
Ireland had to wait until 1979 before another female minister was ever appointed - Marie Geoghan Quinn |
