As a former athlete I had a fair amount of success in high level competitions, but was never into killing myself in training, and living the monk lifestyle much to the chagrin of my coach.
In retrospect I've never regretted my lack of commitment, as a very high percentage of the people who slavishly followed the rather dubious training methods of the Coach ended up having lots of health issues.
Is there anyone here who has regretted pushing themselves to the limit of human endurance in pursuit of victory? |

I was playing Gaelic at 16. I was running and stretching to punch a loose ball into an open goal. Could see "Big Eamon" out the corner of my eye. He had no designs on the ball and I knew it. I kept going, scored the goal and got absolutely poleaxed by big Eamon in the process. My back went into spasm and I was in agony for weeks and still have back problems to this day!! |

Yes, I'm a workaholic. I worked a day and night job, 21hrs a day total, except weekends where I only worked the night job. I burnt out after 6 months. It filled my pockets but didnt do anything for me long term and put me into a terrible habit for future jobs which made me the work monkey. It has only had negative effects on my life for years after, until this year. |

I regret every second wasted playing GAA. If you spent a couple of evenings a week practicing + weekends competing in literally any other skill from childhood up to your mid 20s youd be able to make a few quid from it. Through coaching, performing, selling your work etc. Or maybe I just find football tremendously boring. |

Im the opposite to be honest...
Discovered pints and girls snd lost all focus in both sport and other aspects of life.
I have huge regrets of a wasted decade which in my imagined biography would be called "The Dickhead Years" |

I can remember giving my all in competition once. I was absolutely driven to win at all costs and the crowd could sense that as they were roaring throughout, helping me feed off their emotional support as pure adrenaline coursed through by veins and very being...
My relentless and ruthless pursuit for winning at all costs helped me dig into deeper realms of myself that I never knew existed heretofore. But try as I may, it just wasn't enough as they'd paired me with the short, clumsy, chubby kid for the Under 7's three legged race
Now, I still wear the grass burns with pride that I picked up on that faithful day and often retell the story around the fire in the local park to the meliflous sound of car alarms going off in the distance as people come from far and wide to hear my near tale of victory. Commitment was never a problem for me but some of us work better alone than in team sports |

I regret pushing for pb's in various races for years; 10k's and half's mostly. A pb was amazing, but I mostly saw disappointment and it ruined the enjoyment. In the end, I lost the Garmin (a blessing) and realised what I was missing in terms of enjoying it for the social and health aspects. I now run for fun and couldn't care less about my times. Mrs. |

I always gave everything 100% ,my attitude was if you don't give yourself the best chance you give yourself no chance BUT..BUT ..I NEVER EVER ..not once in my life ..did l ever lose the fun and enjoyment in it..yes l trained hard , Absolutely but not once did l not enjoy it ,there is absolutely no point if the fun and enjoyment are taken out of it ..and that's something l ALWAYS try to instill into kids starting out in sport ...give it everything but DO NOT ever lose the fun in it, whatever level they reach . |

I regret pushing my body past my limits and not listening to my physio, I was hit by a car when I was little. I was lucky to walk again but I did and I loved sports but I pushed myself because I was good, very good at some. At 16 I was playing 16's minor and senior football for my club and for wicklow ladies. I also played soccer I was training 7 days a week and some days I could have trained for 3 hours. At 18 I was trailing for professional ladies soccer but my hips starting giving me trouble which I knew would happen so I went down a road of masking my pain with medication. I am 28 now and fight with pain med addiction and in constant back and hip pain and the pain in my hips wont go till I get them replaced.

I had a car accident ten years ago and suffer with back, sciatica nerve and left hip/leg. I know it's very frustrating and older people say to me your very young to have that. I am still training for now but for how long more I don't know. I find a good regular deep tissue massage very good more so than physio. Also erotic massage helps to lol |

I still try to gym and do work outs, just dont compete in any team sports or high endurance stuff now. Carry excess weight at the moment and need to drop that to help the old joints.
I find exotic massages the best for dealing with pain |

Again ,am sorry to hear of your injuries ,there is nothing worse for those that love physical fitness/sports than injuries ,they are the worst nightmare as they stop or reduce the full enjoyment that should be there , l have found as the body gets older , happens everyone ,it's important to find specific activity that suit beneficially the body ,that it's not being put under excess pressure ,it has taken you this far so Healthy and suitable fitness exercises for the body is important...which if course Sex is one of those ...YIPEEE |

Good morning sexy lady, Keep getting those erotic massages, lol even though they are short enough, not to many around doing them with professional experience. What I find with diet is all in the mind, if one works on the mind it kind of falls into place. I am always intrigued on diet as I have changed a little by little and its working. For me there is always room for improvement. |

Feck it Guys.... some absolutely harrowing stories, and they say playing a sport is good character building stuff! I've never broken any bones fortunately, always limped away with superficial cuts and bruises when other poor fellas were carted off to hospital with broken bones and fractured skull's. I had access to lots of performance enhancing drugs, but being a clean living chap I just couldn't reconcile risking my long-term health for a stupid medal. I know lots of guys who used the juice... amphetamines, anabolic steroids, cortisone, pain killers...etc etc. Unfortunately a lot of them ended up committing suicide, or graduating to recreational drugs. I enjoyed sports, but it was never a big deal for me.. |
