I'm completely sceptical and don't believe in reiki or distance healing. I've had it done to me when I was younger and it didn't do a thing to help. |

Ghosts, distance healing, 5g causing illness, homeopathy ...
These are all further evidence of of a lack of basic science education or understanding among the general population. Things are changing slowly, people now are less credulous and more scientific than they were 100 years ago, but there's still a way to go |

Sure the covid wards are coming down with homeopathic healers and faith healers doing great work and saving lives.. Oh wait, no, that's actual doctors and nurses.. Utter nonsense, up there with energy crystals |

The harm is that the practitioners general lie about the efficacy, and convince people who are genuinely sick to forgo real medicine. Also it encourages people to not learn real science and instead believe in twaddle and nonsense, holding the entire species back |

I used to hang out with a nice enough lady who was a reki master, she was great fun, but she was heavily into the whole woo hoo hippie alternative spirituality shit, utterly delusional and quite frankly barking mad. I attended quite a few group meditation sessions with her, and observed some like-minded people congregating for a common purpose. Some strange freaky shit happened during these gatherings. I think this phenomenon is better known as "Mass" hysteria.
Now here's the thing- billions of people worship an unseen God everyday? To paraphrase Steven Fry- Faith is believe without evidence. As an atheist I don't believe in God, unless someone can provide me with unequivocal evidence to the contrary.
Faith is a very powerful thing, so it really doesn't matter if you are into Woo hoo hippie alternative spirituality -crystal energy healing, rebalanced chakras, positive affirmations Or one of the mainstream religions -kneeling in some church praying for devine intervention..
God isn't going to save us from the corona virus, but science might find a solution. |

"never tried reiki. must look into it"
--------------
That there's an opinion I respect
because you don't know about it but are
willing to look into it more
----------
Now, I don't mind someone saying it's
"amazing" "nonsense" "incredible" or "B.S"
...as long as they have experiential knowledge of a
topic but to just dismiss something or lump it
to conspiracy theories when the principle has
been used for 1,000's of years shows how much
people's minds are in reality welded shut
-
What's also interesting is that if I'd called this
thread "the power of prayer" a lot of people
would have been supportive in how affirmative
prayer can be in complimenting conventional
medicine... so thanks for all your opinions

"It's complete shite. I know of a "healer" who makes an absolute fortune from it. Supposedly can cure everything from a graze/cut, mental health issue to autism. But funny enough their parent has a serious health issue (that's listed on the things they can help with) but can't/won't cure them.
All those charlatans and I include psychic, mediums , faith healers , healers of all u proven types, homeopaths etc they need to be arrested for fraud unless they can prove scientifically that they actually work. "

Might come as a surprise but there's dodgy plumbers, mechanics, Doctors and Lawyers too The "healer" you know isn't EVERY healer or tantric practitioner...

How about also urging them to watch a Youtube video on tantra and "ENERGY ORGASMS" too while they're at it. Same basic principles using energy and intention
Also worth noting...that there's peolple who have done distant healing and prayer witout charging a cent so can't see why they'd want to deceive |

Well I didn't say it was bull I even said I had someone do reiki on me when I was young they claimed it could cure my asthma so my mum took me to see a reiki master several times and it didn't make the slightest difference.Just like the faith healer I was taken to and the goats milk I was made to drink or the flipping Guinness I had to drink with my dinner when I was 9 all because people swore it would help. The only thing that helped then and now is my medication I take daily. So ye I don't believe it works. Nor do I believe someone can heal you by looking at a picture.
But each to their own I know some people who believe it does and that's their perogative I would never try and persuade them otherwise its their belief.
I also don't believe in the power of prayer but again that gives people ease of mind when they need it so there is nothing wrong with that either. Everyone has their beliefs and faith or whatever they believe in and if that helps them get through life and makes their path easier then who is anyone to knock that. |

In case anyone is interested, the claim in this paper is that a group of transcendental meditation practitioners got together and meditated, and cut violent crime in Washington DC by 25% for the duration. Which seems impressive until you find it that they only decided on Washington DC and violent crime after the fact, when they checked the statistics. This is called cherry picking, and is one of a number of dishonest, unscientific techniques used by charlatans |

It doesn't matter what therapy is used, distant or remote or whatever therapy is involved, there is always the possibility of a placebo effect where one will derive a benefit or improvement in the condition due to just doing something, or taking something for it.
That's something that is scientifically proven.

You are a sceptical lot. But each to their own. I'd describe Reiki as the Japanese equivalent of the Christian Lourdes or Knock pilgrimages. A lot of people believe it works, so therefore it does. Someone asked for peer reviewed studies, check out all the studies from Chinese, and Japanese universities(im not going to list them here), and look beyond the western world view. Having an open mind is a gateway to more experiences than you can imagine with a closed mind. I posted last week about ghosts, and figured I'd never get a meet again. So, now this Reiki post might seal my fate. Who knows, there could be a beautiful, sexy hottie out there who has a fetish about Reiki master, ghost hunters. I live in hope. |

"Effects of reiki in clinical practice: a systematic review of randomised clinical trials
Myeong Soo Lee, Max H Pittler, Edzard Ernst
International journal of clinical practice 62 (6), 947-954, 2008
Introduction: The aim of this systematic review is to summarise and critically evaluate the evidence for the effectiveness of reiki.
Methods: We searched the literature using 23 databases from their respective inceptions through to November 2007 (search again 23 January 2008) without language restrictions. Methodological quality was assessed using the Jadad score.
Results: The searches identified 205 potentially relevant studies. Nine randomised clinical trials (RCTs) met our inclusion criteria. Two RCTs suggested beneficial effects of reiki compared with sham control on depression, while one RCT did not report intergroup differences. For pain and anxiety, one RCT showed intergroup differences compared with sham control. For stress and hopelessness a further RCT reported effects of reiki and distant reiki compared with distant sham control. For functional recovery after ischaemic stroke there were no intergroup differences compared with sham. There was also no difference for anxiety between groups of pregnant women undergoing amniocentesis. For diabetic neuropathy there were no effects of reiki on pain. A further RCT failed to show the effects of reiki for anxiety and depression in women undergoing breast biopsy compared with conventional care.
Discussion: In total, the trial data for any one condition are scarce and independent replications are not available for each condition. Most trials suffered from methodological flaws such as small sample size, inadequate study design and poor reporting.
Conclusion: In conclusion, the evidence is insufficient to suggest that reiki is an effective treatment for any condition. Therefore the value of reiki remains unproven."
205 studies, 205...

Lourdes ? Ffs. Provide some scientific evidence that Lourdes is a place that does what it's supposed to . A load of fucking nonsense. Sporadic anecdotal placebos do not convince.
As Carl Sagan once said..extraprdinary claims require extraordinary evidence. People accept delusional claims because they don't critically evaluate them. Charlatans selling gullible people a load of tosh |

You could argue about lack of evidence, and who should bear the burden of proof upon until the cows come home. But it seems if someone just wants to believe something, no amount of logical reasoning will change their mind. Either that, or they refuse to even entertain any reasoning that they dont believe supports their claim. |

I think personally people can believe whatever they want to believe. once its not encroaching on me or my business i dont really care. If everyone thought the same the world would be very bland. I have interests in things even himself rolls his eyes at but at the end of it all i enjoy it and im not harming anyone. that being said i would never encourage anyone to forego medicine if they were seriously ill. live and let live. |

Think this is a bit different though. People having different interests in things is perfectly fine and normal. This type of thing though is preying on vulnerable and easily led people and gaining financially from it, shysters as they're commonly known and the more they are called out on it, the better |
