If youve ever looked at their profile and winked at them (could have been accidental using the old desktop site via phone or something), they can then mail you.

This has happened to me a few times before the mobile site.

Or if they've mailed you before you had the MM cpls blocked and you've replied, they'll be able to still mail you

Thanks for getting in touch privately with their username

We've figured it out

They joined as a MF couple by mistake and between sending your mail and you receiving it, they had been reported for this and a mod had corrected to MM couple.
