How do I type messages on updates

You can't.

If you update your status it will appear on other peoples updates, but not on yours (unless you are your own friend). Butbthere is no way to directly write on updates.

North of The Wall - youll need your vest

To add pics go to your 'My Account' page and click on 'Manage photos' on the menu. There is a link there to add photos.

To post a meet, go to 'Meets, Events' link on the blue menu at the top of each page and the page gives you a link to add a meet
