How do I post a comment it update? I don't seem to have the option? Thanks

You can't directly post a comment in updates. They are made up of status' and various other things.

You won't see your status in your updates though.

If you add your profile - to your friends list - you will see your status posts in the Updates list.

I can't even post a status currently ..how do I do that?

No you should still be able to post a status without being a site supporter
