Totally illiterate where computers are concerned so some advice appreciated.
Currently operating our lappy with Windows 7 Home Premium . Microsoft have done all the 'checks' and say Windows 10 will operate on our computer successfully and we are entitled to the free upgrade .
Our question is ..What happens to all our photo's and videos we have currently on Windows 7 . Do they automatically get switched over ?...would hate to lose them all
Thanks in advance

I upgraded to Windows 10, I much prefer it over previous versions, once you figure out the slight changes,- settings, some controls etc, but it really is very intuitive
However, if you try it and don't like it, there is an option (somewhere) to go back to your previous version with 28 days.
As other posters have said, all data and settings are preserved, in the right places. |

those that are using windows 7 or 8.1 windows is now adding data collection to these systems as important updates
Windows 7 and 8 users have been plagued by "upgrade preparation" updates but left alone otherwise up until recently when it comes to this new level of data collecting.
This changed recently with the release of several updates for both operating systems that step up the game.
these are the update numbers
KB3068708 Update
KB3022345 (replaced by KB3068708)
KB3075249 Update
KB3080149 Update
If these updates are installed on the system, data is sent to Microsoft regularly about various activities on it.
Microsoft lists two host names in KB3068708 that data is received from and sent to:
vortex-win.data.microsoft.com
settings-win.data.microsoft.com
Please note that it appears that you can block the hosts listed above using firewalls running on the target PC.
or you can remove them in control panel
You may remove those updates using the Control Panel, or by running the following commands using an elevated command prompt:
wusa /uninstall /kb:3068708 /quiet /norestart
wusa /uninstall /kb:3022345 /quiet /norestart
wusa /uninstall /kb:3075249 /quiet /norestart
wusa /uninstall /kb:3080149 /quiet /norestart
It is recommended to "hide" them afterwards so that they are not picked up and installed again on the computer system |

The option for auto updates has also been taken away from the PC owner so you are handing control of your PC to ms which can lead to problems as has been proved by a driver update for nvidia chipset which managed to cause a lot of problems for a lot of people who upgraded. |

I have upgraded from 8 to 10, a friend went from 7 to 10 and you will keep all your files, they will appear in the appropriate albums and folders once 10 is installed, I would always back everything up though to another drive if possible, I learn't the hard way years ago when my hard drive packed up and lost all photos and programmes 'cos I thought it wouldn't happen to me'! |

I've upgraded our desktop from Win8 to Win10, was running fine, but now every time you access the internet it says "A critical error affecting Start menu and Cortana has been detected" and it shuts down, when I attempt internet access again theres no problems, anyone got any advice? |

that Cortana problem is a *nightmare* to fix...
You can basically either create a new user and hopefully it will resolve itself.
I had it with a machine, but eventually it kept re-occurring so much I reinstalled the computer.
There have been Windows 10 roll ups to address the issue, but it didn't fix it in my case.

I received an update from Microsoft about a fortnight ago for Windows 10. Everything had been working fine then went to print and the update had deleted my printer driver and all associated programs. Was a bugger to re-install it again. Thanks Microsoft. Grrrr. |

Windows 10, in its' own right,is probably very good. Personally I run Windows 7 Home Premium and did upgrade to Windows 10....being a non-literate computer buff the 'new' interface kind of threw me off at a tangent.
I was unable to locate what I wanted with different things, got a little frustrated, and promptly re-installed Windows 7 Home Premium. I suppose that as I 'get along' with Windows 7 it suits my needs and having tried (and failed) to calibrate with Windows 10 it just didn't seem right for me.
Perhaps the moral might be to continue with what you know and then, and only then, deal with a new interface when that necessity arrives....just my humble thoughts!
Windows 7 has never let me down, does what it needs to do (for me) so until the absolute desire is there to switch to Windows 10 my philosophy is...if it ain't broke than no need to fix it... |

it can be fixed, it is when the upgrade was done, some of the system files ended up corrupt,i have had several people complain about this one or windows critical error, windows out of memory. it can be fixed via command prompt, will take a while to fix, |

When I upgraded to win10 the computer started running really slow with a major leak with the system memory and coy running at 100% and hd constantly running. Turned out there was a program running (forget what it was called) I needed to play around with my registry to stop it. I also discovered that kaspersky needed uninstalling before upgrading and reinstalling after.
Since that it work beautifully |
