Just an idea but it may be a good thing to limit the number of messages a new member can receive. Not as a punishment but as a help. I see statuses so often from new members like 'please, I've only been in here 5 minutes and I've got so many messages, kind of off putting'
I think everyone is trying to be the first person to message but we might be scaring people away from the site... |

I think it would be better that when you join as a new member every single filter is automatically applied so you can't receive any messages until you've completed your profile and set your filters accordingly. That was at least you'll get messages from those you are interested in when you are ready rather than say 50 single guys messaging a new couple that are only interested in meeting other couples and then they can't get any new messages  |
