You can also block them via a message if they've sent you one and from their profile as there is the option to block in the menu at the side |

when I tried this it didnt work as they blocked me first. Im not sure what to do as I had a bad experience with this person and dont want them to see my profile or be able to contact me

You went to the following page and typed their username in the box and clicked on "Block" ?
