Deleting your own forum post

I notice we have the option for a few mins to delete posts we write before they become permanent. Why does it leave the body of the post up and not just delete the whole entry ? Leaves a right mess !

Because it shows there was a post so people can understand posts which are reacting to it. To remove it altogether could lead to people posting inflammatory comments, letting a few others respond then removing the original comment which would make those who replied look like they started it.
