You have the very useful feature of retaining messages as a conversation, when one message in it is selected.

Do copies of these messages stay on the datebase even if the prime message is deleted from the 'read messages' screen?

Also it would be really useful if a conversation were able to be brought up by clicking on the 'you messaged them X days ago' icon, or the 'they messaged you'

Oh I like that idea because I find myself hunting through my sent mail to see what I told them x days ago 'I said no thanks on Friday! '

I think you will find that all messages will be retained on the server.

When you 'delete' them - that only controls whether you want to see that message in your list of messages.

Why don't you use the note facility on their profile as that way you don't have to worry about finding the message, and you can still use it even if they block you
