Irish profile stuck with UK postcode

Hello,
We are based in Ireland.
Recently we changed our location to UK to view UK profiles as we plan to visit London soon. On the search page we input a London postcode for the area we wanted to view profiles from. We viewed some profiles and then changed our location back to Ireland. Since then our account is now stuck with a UK postcode that we can’t remove. We can change it but we can’t remove it.
Because of this, our profile now shows the Distance heading with the small world icon. It did not show this before, the same as the standard version of all Irish profiles - they do not show the distance heading as Irish postcodes (Eircodes) are not used on the Fabswingers site. This is different to the distance heading and value from the Who Is Near feature with the small mobile phone icon (we don’t use the Who Is Near feature). Under the distance heading it gives our approximate distance from the postcode that is set on our account which is currently a London postcode. This shows us as being hundreds of miles from where we actually are and in a different country. We have been flooded with views, winks, friend requests and messages from UK based profiles, most often from London. Quite a few of them have messaged and said something like “Hey, see you are in my area, would you like to meet?”.
With our profile constantly showing a location that puts us in a different country, hundreds of miles away from where we actually are also potentially could put off profiles who are in Ireland and close to us from contacting us.
It would make sense that the UK postcode value is disabled when a profile location is set to any option other than UK and as a result does not show the distance heading and value on the profile.
Can anything be done to help please?
Thank you. |

I’m not sure if this is helpful but you can change you location in two places. One is through the “searching in” area. Browsing uk, browsing Ireland etc. The other is in account, then looking for, then country.
One of these might not be set correct. |

Thanks for the reply. Yes, you can indeed change location details in two places, one for location in relation to profiles that you are looking at (their location) and one for your location, connected to your profile. Both of these are set to Ireland but we are still stuck with our profile being connected to a UK postcode that we can’t remove unfortunately |

"Click account then my details and change post code at the top and click save at the bottom "
Thanks for that but we aren’t trying to change the UK postcode that is connected to our account (we can change it), we want to remove it as we are not in the UK. It seems once you input a postcode when your account location is set to UK, it cannot be removed, only changed. Even though our account location is set to Ireland, our distance information still shows and the value is how far we are from whatever UK postcode is set on our account. Currently we have a London postcode set on our account so we are showing as close to this area when we are actually nearly 700 km/400 miles away on the east coast of Ireland. |

Your profile reads as in Ireland and not UK |

Yes, this is correct and not the issue. The issue is that the distance value on our profile is based on a UK postcode (currently N20 for Greater London) which we can’t remove as the site won’t allow you to leave the postcode blank and it shows our profile as being X amount of miles from this area when we are in fact hundreds of miles from that area and in a different country even though we have our account location set to Ireland. When we have our account location set to Ireland there is no postcode option which is correct as the site doesn’t use postcodes for accounts based in Ireland. When we change our location to UK there is a postcode option and the site remembers the most reason postcode that was used. We can change it but can’t remove it. When we change our location back to Ireland the site holds onto this postcode value and continues to show our distance from the UK postcode. What should happen is when an account location is set to any location other than UK, the site should disregard this UK postcode based distance information and not show on the profile. |

i guess thats the same as the "age" section on here , you can only change it once then your stuck with that age.
i,m wondering if you can do it on your laptop or mobile phone under location services ...maybe |

Yes, it seems to work similarly to this. We assume that if you create a new account and choose UK as the location the site forces you to give a postcode (can any UK based members confirm this?). This isn’t the case when creating a new account when you choose Ireland as the location as the site does not use postcodes for Irish based accounts. The issue seems to be that if you create a non UK based account but then change your location to UK (in our case temporarily in order to view profiles in the UK) the first time that is done the UK postcode box is blank and it will stay this way unless you input a value into the postcode box. Once you do, there is a permanent postcode value in that box, the site remembers it. You will be able to change the postcode but not remove it. This isn’t a problem as such, this problem is that when you change your location back to Ireland the site continues to hold onto this postcode value and the specific issue is that it uses that value to show other profiles how far away you are from them based on that postcode area.
We have tried all sorts to rectify this including changing back and forth settings on mobile using both the mobile version of the site, the desktop version of the site and the same using a laptop. We’ve even tried using the site on a laptop while using a VPN which proves out that the postcode value is site/account set the same as your other account information and connected to your account rather than any type of location based set up. It seems to calculate the distance value from the postcode you give the site rather than where you actually are and this is why you may often see different distance values between the postcode based location (icon with the globe) and the mobile/GPS/location services based location (icon with the mobile phone). This difference only applies to accounts that have chosen to turn on the Who’s Near function. This is the problem, added to that by the fact once a UK postcode is given to the site a UK postcode is permanently attached to your account from that point forward. |

"First half of your Postcode: (e.g. N20 for N20 8BB)
We use this for "nearby" searches. Postcode is not shown on your profile.
AL9
Town:
UK
So youve done this ? and saved it"
Yes, unfortunately. We put N20 as our postcode when we changed our account to view UK based profiles.
If we hadn’t have done this (although the site prompts you to do it) we wouldn’t have this issue. |

very frustrating as it actually states , " we use the postcode for nearby searches" so your ireland post code should activate that!!
but alas , it dosen,t.
Can only assume its a fab thing to stop users constantly changing there ages and areas to contact others who have certain blocks in place. |

maybe use the "contact us" section , see if they can help ...site owner rather than admin?
I have a question about using the site
I want to report or discuss another user with site admin
My content (for example, photo or video) is on here without my permission

"Change your country, that should work"
Thanks. Yes, it should work as in when you change your country to any one of the available options outside of the UK, the site should disregard the UK postcode value connected to your account and as a result, not show the distance heading on your profile. When we change our location to USA for example we show 3,000 to 4,000 miles away but it is 3,000 to 4,000 miles away from whatever UK postcode was last set on our account when our account had the location set to UK, not from the location of the area we are actually in or even country we are actually in.
We’ve done some testing with this. Strangely, Irish based accounts that are in the same position as us (changed their location to UK and input a UK postcode and then changed their location back to Ireland) can see the distance heading on our profile, the same as all other UK based accounts we assume. Irish based accounts who have never input a UK postcode after changing their location to UK cannot see the distance heading on our profile.
Last weekend we were with another member with an Irish/Dublin based account and the distance heading is shown on their profile like ours. We can see the info on their profile and they can see the info on ours. They work for periods of time in London so when they are there they change their location to UK and input a postcode for the area that they are staying in. We show as 10-15 miles from each other as we both have Greater London postcodes on our accounts (which neither of us can remove). We changed our postcode to one in Scotland and we then showed 450 miles from each other (the approximate distance between London and Scotland). When we did this we were sitting beside each other in Dublin. |

Indeed it is.
The site doesn’t use any postcode based functionality for Irish accounts and we assume the same for any accounts based in any of the countries offered by the site that are outside the UK.
If we change our country to UK we can change the postcode to any UK postcode we choose and as many times as we like. There is no limit on the amount of changes to the postcode value we can make. |

"maybe use the "contact us" section , see if they can help ...site owner rather than admin?

Thanks. We have done this already a number of times over the past while but we haven’t been able to achieve any solution to the problem as of yet unfortunately.
We understand that there is a lot of work involved in running the site, admin and site owners are likely very busy and also that location based functionality can be complex but we really want to be able to fix this issue as it is causing us a lot of hassle from numerous angles. Also this issue is not unique to us, there are a number of Irish based accounts that have the exact same problem. We assume that any accounts based elsewhere (USA, Canada, Australia etc.) have the same issue if they were to follow the steps that we did. Say a member who is based in the USA is coming to the UK on holidays. While they are in the UK they set their country to UK and put in a postcode for the area they are in. When they go home and change their country back to USA they are likely to have the distance showing on their profile which will be based on whatever UK postcode was last used when they had their country set to UK. This information will be incorrect by several thousand miles and the whole North Atlantic Ocean… |

"It's probably going to mean that many people will be forced to create multiple accounts, for when they are traveling, unless Fab can cancel this anomaly on postcodes. "
A workaround yes but a very less than ideal one.
As the site works now, the postcode functionality and everything that is connected to it should only be active when an account has the country set to UK. That would solve this issue. |

Unfortunately from our situation with our last profile it seems once you change over to UK this will always be an issue. We tried messaging admin etc, but our issue never changed.
We also noticed with new profile even tho we never changed location to UK we show up in UK updates.

Thanks for this info. It looks like it is a problem for a lot of people unfortunately.
It’s really frustrating. The other issue aside from how our profile appears to other people is how other people’s profiles appear to us. All profiles close to us/within Ireland that have distance info shown by using the Who’s Near function show as 300+ miles away from us because they are 300+ miles away from the UK postcode that is stuck on our account. So the distance information for people looking at us and the distance information for people we look at is totally incorrect and of no value whatsoever to anybody. This morning as of 09:07 we have received over twenty messages from UK based profiles, the majority being based in London. |
