Message limit

Does anyone know if there is a way to see older messages in a chat? If one of us has a long chat with someone I want to be able to show the chat to my partner but there is what appears to be a limit on the number of messages kept / visible.

I think once a message has gone off the bottom of the message thread you can't get it back.
