Try it in more built up locations, we tried it once when we were away on holiday somewhere deserted, nearest person that showed up was 73 miles away.

a village near Haywards Heath in East Sussex

I was on a train recently travelling from North to South and had 2 messages from random people who must have assumed I was nearby as my train had stopped at stations near their location!
