With a block, messages would still remain in your inbox and sent folder unless you deleted them, you just wouldn't be able to respond to them, it would come up with a page saying you've been blocked.
It can be frustrating when people just disappear half way through a conversation but sometimes you have to look at it like you've probably dodged a bullet.
