"We have 22 photos in our private gallery, but on our profile it says none. Why?"
Put them in friends only gallery to show on your profile private gallery link 
(You're right, it IS confusing!)

there are three settings; public, friends and private. private no one can see except you but you can mail them.
o think your taking about the friends gallery. change your private ones to friends only and they will appear on your 'private' gallery on your profile.
