Does anyone know if it's possible to access old messages no longer showing in the inbox? Are these archived by admin or anything?

My unread message button is highlighted showing a unread message but there are none there as I've read, replied and deleted them but it hasn't cleared itself. Any suggestions on what to do now as it looks like there is something there but there isn't?
