Living in Cap d’Agde now but hate French supermarkets.
Compared to the UK customer service is nil.
Always have to queue because only 2/3 of 20 tills are ever open, nobody to ask where something is, service without a smile, always feel you are doing them a favour, prices are higher and always go up be 50% for the summer months.
Really could do with a Waitrose down here to show them how its done! |

Wow I've not experienced anything like that . Every time I've needed pointing in the right direction the staff have been nothing but helpful. The fresh food on offer is on the whole amazing and part of the reason I moved here. Seriously if the UK's so great why move to another country and then complain about it ? |

Often when you live in a country, rather than visiting on holiday you do start to see the cracks in the system.
Living in France, I've come to appreciate many positive things about the UK, thing we used to take for granted. France has better weather and food but there is an inherent dishonesty hence the bag checking in supermarkets, security guards everywhere in almost every shop/mall, police and gendarmes hunting in packs.
Perhaps your rose tinted viewpoint might become more tarnished after you have lived here for a bit
Incidentally, I am not English, my partner and my children are French. |

I think that depends an awful lot on what area you live in, same as in the UK, some good areas, some not so.
In our area, crime is not exactly non-existent, but very very low, however the area around my companies offices in Marseille is a different matter.
However, I think you will find that the packs of marauding gendarmes that you mention is actually the additional security placed in response to the recent various terrorist threats and attacks rather than any real 'dishonesty', a point made by the small red vigilance triangles placed on the entrance to supermarkets and malls etc. The more popular the area - the heavier the security.
As we've been here 17 years now, we've had a good chance to see the cracks but we have a good supply of plaster and a paint..... |

Down in 30. Bought a place this summer, long overdue!
Yes it’s very different. But surely that’s part of the charm? Some good points, some irritating. So just like the UK really except warmer, better wine, fab simple food as well as the fancy stuff, stunning variety of scenery, the list goes on and on...
Maybe I’ll see you in Intermarché !!!

I live in rural France, so things are going to be different as opposed to living in a larger metropolitan area I guess.
It's not a case of viewing anything through rose tinted glasses, it's merely a reflection on how I've been treated in supermarkets and other shops and has nothing to do with how long I've lived here. |

Hello _oinus994
I'm in Cannes this weekend.
I know you'll not be there but can I ask if you'd give me some info on any saunas or clubs that would let a single guy in.
Many thanks in advance. J |
