Due to circumstances beyond my control I have had to rebook a few flights and travel from Montpelier to Cap d Agde . ( for some trips I have four flights booked and five for one ) .
I usually get the train from Montpelier but did not want to be stranded at the airport if the flight was delayed .
I have resolved that issue by arranging a taxi transfer .
.However I was talking to a lady at work about an apartment in Portugal and she mentioned that they always just hire cars for their transfers..
I has never thought of hiring a car previously but decided to obtain a few quotes and the cost was less than I expected. However I think that the excess insurance would add extensively to the price and I would not like to leave myself exposed to the mercy of a car hire company in a foreign country.
In this case car hire is probably not a solution as my return flight is from.a different airport .
I have driven mini buses abroad when I was very young ( 20 ) and also hold licences to drive both lorries and buses. However I find it slightly off putting as to how close cars drive in France .
Did those members who drive in France have any difficulty adopting to driving there ? Did you use sat nav for navigation.?
When hiring cars did anyone have any issues with vehicle damage ?. I am always very cautious on this issue as in my earlier life I undertook an investigation into vehicle damage on behalf of an insurance company who managed the entire demonstration fleet of a major motor manufacturer.
I was quoted 40 Euros per day for car hire . Anyone have a ball park figure as to how much per day the hiring company would charge to insure the excess ?.
On this occasion I have resolved the issue by booking a taxi transfer and hopefully will not fly to Montpelier late at night in future .
However any information would be appreciated for future reference . |

Have driven in France many times in both left & right hand drive cars and wouldn’t expect you to have any problems generally. Also rented many times & whilst I haven’t really had any issues on return with the rental companies, have had several issues with genuine damage to the car in car parks etc. So definitely would suggest insuring the excess is wise.
This can easily be another €20 a day - or a much better way is to get an annual travel insurance policy that automatically covers it or in the past you could get it for free with some credit cards (although the latter was in Switzerland and admittedly might not be available in the U.K.......) |

Hi. Thanks for the advice. I used to buy annual cover in the UK. However the car hire company still swipe your card for the excess. Last time I declined the hirers cover they then tried to claim that there were a variety of exclusion clauses on my policy. |

Yes...I have encountered this several times. It seems, as long as some one else is liable to pay, they will try to horse it on. As a result, I always buy the renters insurance...cheaper in the long run, and less hassle |

The government have signs up saying leave two white marks as a safe space on the motorway. So they do drive close . Tolls everywhere use your bank card but it's easier than driving at home they know how to drive no trucks in the fast lane . No lane hoggers no last minute lane changers to exit motorway. Safe travelling |

tag for motorway is quicker saves waiting in line ,but only worthwhile if your a regular visitor. sat nav will work fine as long as it has europe cover not just uk , maps on phone works just as well, buy a yearly excess damage insurance about £40 where as you can pay that with your hire company for a weekend ,so thats an obvious todo !!! and covers you on all hire vechicles worldwide

I've hired in France, Germany, Italy, Spain lots of times, 3 so far this year. With the exception of Italy I've found the roads and drivers to be every but as good as the UK and in the case of Fr and Ger the roads are better. Take out your own excess insurance as its much cheaper and don't listen to any of the crap that the sales rep tells you. If you can hire an automatic that's even easier, but just remember that there are tolls to pay and sometimes you have to but a tag to drive in different countries. Good luck and don't be frightened, it's really straightforward |
