I might have a few days free shortly and was investigating travel to the South of France .
Usually I fly Ryan Air but the choice of flights is restricted as this time of year .
I have investigated SNCF and whilst it is more expensive than flying , there is a choice of departure times every day. You can leave London at 7 am and be in Agde at 16 30.
One disputes advantage is that you have to change trains at Paris . Has anyone done this and is the departure stand / station for Agde /South Coast easy to find . ?
What is the on board catering on the train like for both quality of food and price . ?
For £10 extra you can upgrade your ticket to get drinks included . I am assuming that this is just coffee or tea ?
Travelling by train does illustrate just how competitive air travel has become . Going by train is twice the price of flying .
When boarding at Saint Pancreas , does it take long time go through passport control for the Eurostar.?

We've done Agde by train a few times and managed to change at Lille, which was very easy. I'd recommend upgrading the TGV to 1st class as it only cost a few euro extra and you get a bigger seat.
You could also look at idTGV which does trains from Paris to fixed stops. They used to do Paris to Beziers and looked very good value.
We found buying tickets from the SNCF french website in Paris cheaper than the UK. Might have all changed now though as this was a few years ago. |

On Saturdays there's a direct train service from London to Marseilles - no change required. Sets off at about 7am and gets there at 14:30 ish if I recall.
The TGV is a great way to travel. The upgrade to first is sometimes only a few euros. At other times the price difference is huge.
We'd definitely recommend it as a relaxing way to get south.
Avoid the sleeper train. It's like going back to the 1970's |
