We are in Normandy and noticed that no one comes up on the "who's nearby" in France. We have a fair few from Jersey (42 miles). It's not that we are looking for FABers but just a mystery.

We wondered why there are lots of people in the Channel islands and not on the mainland and concluded that its because the islanders might have a mobile phone contract with a French company rather than a UK one.
We have a data contract with Sosh in France so it doesn't cost anything to be online but someone with a UK contract would have to pay data roaming charges and so would perhaps only be connected long enough to check their messages etc.
Just an idea - this might be quite wrong ! |

Normandy France |
We live in Normandy too, near Caen and the D-Day beach (actually the Merville-Franceville nude beach is only 10 mins from us... and the weather has been of the beach type this year... Drop us a mail if anyone is around this direction.

" who's near" works off mobile phones;
I guess therefore; it only recognizes UK mobiles, and doesn't recognize French mobiles; nor , probably, UK mobiles roaming on French networks.
Certainly when I am in UK, roaming on my French mobile, I can see others, but my phone can't be seen. |

That sounds right as I have a UK phone that is roaming and only shows when I'm on WiFi. It doesn't detect foreign networks .. shame really |
