On the 15th August the South of France will be celebrating the 80th anniversary of Operation Dragoon, the landing of troops on the beaches to liberate Toulon and Marseille so the big ships could dock for Allied forces to go up the Rhône valley and link with those already landed in Normandy.
The very first beach to be taken was the one our apartment overlooks, by soldiers from the Groupe des Commandos d'Afrique. There’s a little cemetary by the bus stop with thirteen graves: ten crosses and three arabic markers. Our little village with less than 800 permanent residents already swells to 10,000 visitors in August, Heaven knows how many there’ll be this year, might give it a miss!

There is a Naturiste beach and campsite a bit further south down the coast, just Google “Arnaoutchot Camping Naturiste” if that helps....

Only that it was insanely busy during the season when I visited. Simply moving around town and driving to and fro was a logistical nightmare. The dune de pilou was cued up and backed up for kilometres so we avoided that. Top tip: travel early in the morning and during lunchtime. The roads will be quieter. I've not been to a nudist beach on the Atlantic side. Keen though as it's different gravy. |

Start from Royan down the coast .. There are a couple of nudist beaches there.. then either take the ferry to the haut medoc where theres more naturist beaches and of course, Euronat, Mantalivet and le Gurp etc.
Or go down the Estuary side, no naturist beaches down there but faster roads.. |

"Start from Royan down the coast .. There are a couple of nudist beaches there.. then either take the ferry to the haut medoc where theres more naturist beaches and of course, Euronat, Mantalivet and le Gurp etc.
Or go down the Estuary side, no naturist beaches down there but faster roads.. "
Good advice, the roads on the sea side are slow even out of season. If you follow the Gironde side you're in wine country, some of the best in France. Try Pauillac and St. Estephe but buy from the vineyards just outside these towns where its cheaper and just as good. |
