This is probably not much use to anyone taking the western or central routes.
However for anyone who has taken the Rotterdam or Amsterdam ferries and is driving the eastern route (via Lyon) we have found what we think is the best stopover in France (and we've tried a lot)
Around 100 kms above Lyon is the village of Tournus. On the northern edge, right next to the motorway junction is The Village Motel.
Nearly all rooms are ground level like small bungalows. All have a terrace and you park right in front of your room.
Room rate from around 60/70€ per night.
Oh! and a great restaurant in the grounds.  |

If you are going via Portsmouth/Caen/Tours/Toulouse then we used to stay in Brive la Gaillarde, south of Limoges. Big Carrefour there to pickup fuel/provisions as well.
Sadly mostly Ibis, Campanile, etc. rather than B&B but we were usually staying there under 10 hours... time for bed and shower, occasionally a fuck if the driver wasn't knackered! |

However the faceless corporate to which you refer is providing a vital service to both the public and apartment owners . They will have invested millions of pounds in the relevant IT infrastructure and employ a substantial number of staff .
The advantages of this system are twofold .
1 . Any renter booking accommodation will know that their advance payments are in safe hands as the payment is held by the platform and only released for payment to the proprietor after the stay has expired .In addition renters can check reviews of the property concerned and there is a very wide database listing what property is available . The tracking information on the site is sophisticated and highly organised .
2. From a property owners perspective you can be satisfied that the platform is a highly effective marketing tool from which you can obtain bookings very quickly . One only has to compare how quickly bookings come in through a booking platform to that of having your own booking website . To generate the same level of bookings from a proprietors website you would probably have to spend a lot more on web site driving platforms than the fees charged by a large multi national booking platform . |
