Pic Approving

Just wondered if there was much checking done when non-verified (either photo verified or met in person) profile users, especially new to site, upload pics.

Was with a friend earlier browsing profiles (as you do) and using a simple tool (tineye) managed to find about 20 profiles that appear to have been set up using pics sourced from the web!

Some could be found on over 50 sites around the world from the USA to South America and Eastern Europe! Whilst I understand some members may post their pics on other similar sites to FAB - surely there are some checks done prior to them being approved? And appearing on multiple random porn sites must set off some kind of alarm bells with mods?

With the ammount of photos uploaded everyday I doubt the mods would have the time to use Tineye to do a check on them, it would be a full time job!

Strange! Took 0.02 seconds to find 56 sites one pic was on - so if you're right and they don't have the time - do they just approve anything that doesn't break rules about content?

mods are volunteers, i assume they just check no rules are broken...the site relies on a sense of community and ppl reporting profiles if they see something fishy

It might have taken Tineye 0.02 seconds to do your search but how long did it take you to upload the photo to Tineye, clicking back and forward to the site, reporting the photo, etc? Times that by thousands of photos and you get how long??

I appreciate they're volunteers, but identifying the fake profiles early on - usually within the first couple of days of being on site (which is when pics tend to start being uploaded) would enhance the quality of the community and save admin responding to reports later on. Downloading tineye to your toolbar for example means you can simply click on any pic on site and get a result in less than a second.

And no i'm not on commission from tineye - just find it a ridiculously simple and effective tool!

No need to upload - have tineye on your toolbar, right click on any picture, result in under a second!

You're only counting the time it takes Tineye to do it's search......

No disrespect to you Jemima - but I doubt if i 'tineyed' your pics they'd be showing on south american dating site profiles, polish camgirl ads, dozens of international generic porn sites etc. One i've seen today did - and has over 20 friends already after 2 days on site - many of whom have probably been duped into sharing all sorts of personal photos and possibly info!

And your point is? If a mod has to view a pic to establish if it's breaking any rules - a search could be done in a fraction of the time it takes their brain to assess the content!

20 fake pics on profiles and it tk you 0.02 seconds to find, there is thousands of pics uploaded every day so by the time a mod goes threw thousands of pics it would of tk you less time to report the fake pics

See my point above! All pics have to be approved anyway - they're not just automatically accepted.

My point is it takes more time that you are saying and Tineye and Google Images won't always give results or it will give "false positive" results.

Try it sometime it really doesn't! I'm not suggesting it's flawless - but can't be anything but beneficial in preventing web ripped pics being used to set up fake profiles.

To be fair I've had pics approved which were then unapproved because they had faces, so the mods do re-visit them.

But can you imagine the number of pics uploaded every day? There'd be one poor mod, in a darkened room, murmering 'no, no, not another cock next to a badly shopped Raid can. Please, anything but that!' It'd drive them potty!

And one further point - Tineye only allows you to "check out" a certain number of images per day/week/month before they want to charge you to use their service.

Ha! Not sure there'd be too many fake ones of those - although recalling that thread about the apparent 'red cock extension' the other week....could be wrong!

I guess i'm looking at it as a useful tool for vetting the new profiles rather than existing, already verified ones. A sort of 'prevention rather than cure' mechanism to reduce the gripes and pain felt by many in relation to the fakes. I too have fallen foul of the 'visible tattoo's on others' rule - and had previously approved pics pulled.

That's a different kind of problem to those deliberately wasting peoples time!

Jeez! Calm down! Just trying to help 'the community' - thought that's what the forum was for!!

If they're already being checked - whats the issue! I'm not suggesting something that will take any more time than the current system!

No one is perfect, and that includes mods, so mistakes do happen at times.

I wouldn't rely on Tineye too much on most pics, as lots of people load to a few sites/ they may be lifted and put onto other sites/ they show up as now being 50 pics on different sites....see a pattern here?

As always, report any pics that have slipped through the net and Admin review.

Never said it was perfect - but like I said - it's the new profiles that seem to be worse than those established ones like yours! Can't imagine anyone querying your credibility!

When someone set's up a contact site they can buy a pre-built database for as little as £10, these contain 10's of 1000's of fake profiles and used to make a new site look busy.

These profiles are made up with random images pulled of the web then a bit of content added to make up a profile.

What if some poor bugger managed to have one of there pictures added to one of these databases and end up appearing on several of these dating/cam/contact sites.. Now this poor bugger would appear fake as tinyeye finds them on 50 sites!

And yes it happenes a lot.

I get what you're saying Tony - but the odds of a new member, quoting in their profile 'new to site/lifestyle', aged mid twenties, appearing on multiple porn sites dating back to as early as 2005 - seems a little unlikely!

Not suggesting use of software like this should determine whether a profile is accepted or not - but on a free site where there's no financial cost for muppets to do as they please - in cases of doubt could a simple message not be sent requesting photo verification?

Would you not prefer to know that those you're contacting/potentially exchanging personal pics and info with are really genuine?

People can already make these judgements themselves without admin's intervention can't they? If they see new profiles and decide that they'd prefer only to interact with those that are PV'd they can already do so.

This thread has been useful, it has lead us to look at improving the image moderation tools and we plan to flag more clearly NEW profiles within that so that those images can be scrutinised more closely by the mods

As always we do rely on user reports to spot things the mods miss, hit REPORT on profiles/pics and Admin will re-review
