IP SCANNERS!!

how come certain people in chat can scan ip addresses/numbers and tell others that they are not newbies and have been in chat before and also divulge there previous chat name!!

people who delete come back with a new username have obviously left for a reason they dont come back to be QUIZZED and GRILLED by these 'hackers' what they are doing is actually breaking the law!!

this opens a whole new door for safety especially for woman who have young kids and to me safety on these kinds of sites is PARAMOUNT!!

The safest way to keep your photo's your property is not to put any up. I don't think there is a way any site can protect your pics.

no dnt think itz a wind up tbh av seen it 4 masel in a chatroom a newbie had joind the site,n waz told by a person they wurnot new 2 the site az they had scannd the newbiez ip address think thiz iz not gd 4 safety wat nxt? will thiz person if they dnt like u giv owt personel detailz abt u? x

sounds like some game playing is going on between members to me.....

report the concern by reporting the profile of the person who is grilling you.....giving all the info you can....

well why was this person not banned from chat then at the time as there was mods in the room at the time!!

I'm not so sure that people can scan ip addys.

When I was a chat mod, I could always tell when someone I'd given a life ban to came back under a different name.

It's no sherlock holmes powers or anything fancy like that. It's plain old common sense, if they were an asshole before you banned them, they'll be an asshole when they rejoin and assholes have traits which doesn't take a genius to suss out ....

For those who wern't assholes and just left, they still have traits, things they say, the way they talk, still doesn't take a member of mensa to suss out who they are - in fact lots of them want you to know who they are because they left with a bit of a flounce and regretted it but don't have the balls to say, 'oops, I'm back' so they put out as many clues as they can so we all suss out who they are.

Not rocket science really if you take time to think about it

Neither do you need a program to suss out a 'new' old chat user, especially if you are a regular user of chat.

Peoples chat habits, traits, patterns, call them what you will are so very easy to spot if you are a regular user of chat, or indeed a mod who only banned them 7 days ago.

I remember banning the same member about 9 times - everytime they came back on, I spotted them immediately - even their user name gave clues. It became a bit of a game in the end until eventually they got sick.

ip addresses scanning isnt new, but being honest why people want to do it is beyond me unless they are a hacker or a troll!!!!

im in chat alot and i see the new and old profiles and people who leave and come back its pretty obvious

Im I missing something here….

If and its a big IF that someone could get your IP address from the chat then as a general rule, all that does is give you the ISP that you run on and an idea of the the location of the ISP's base, which could be in another country.

For instance, Ive just traced my ip with 2 sites. One came back as london, the other Dundee. Neither are where I am.

Also, to find out what your username used to be then they would of had to of compiled a comprehensive database of previous users from the site over a period of several months or years to compare IP's to.

It can be done, even using a command from the C:\ prompt, but most times either the ip of the host or of the isp will be revealed.

There is softeware available to reveal individual user ip addys which will work in certain chatroom situations but for what ?

To say, 'You were here before as username ***' ?

I really don't think so!

i just traced my ip address, n got 2 different places, im in glasgow and cornwall?????????? gawd konws how that works hehe, as fo the foto part that bit does worry me a little that pics can be copied easily, but mine r friends only n it takes a lot to get on ma froends list so thats the best way to talke that prob?

Speaking in general:

If you've been in chat, and re-join, then it's usually pretty obvious to the regulars, by your style of writing, who you are.

The only people who can view IP addresses of chatters are Admin, and Admin are discreet. We can only show IP addresses to the police upon receipt of formal, verified requests from them. IP addresses of other chatters are not revealed through chat to users.

In summary: Sounds like someone is pulling your leg.
