Question about local updates

Obviously when we click on the local updates it shows us people in the area based on what we are looking for in general. Like it will only show men if we select that in what we're looking for. What about the other way around? Do we still show on the local updates for all the men in the same area even though we have not selected them?

(this is not about the who is nearby list, just the local updates)

Local updates only shows me folk looking for men, but that’s down to my account preferences and me wanting only to see people who may be looking for someone who fits my gender and age.
