"Out of curiosity why? Last online is a good way to tell who is active and who hasn't logged in for months especially when searching profiles. "
Coz you say goodnight to a guy then maybe stay on for a look on the forums and that said guy who you told you were going to sleep then messages and says "thought you were going to bed".. |

I agree.
Me - sorry, haven’t got time today
Him - thought you didn’t have time, you’ve been online for the last hour?
Me - I’m really busy today
Him - not too busy, you’ve been online for most of the morning
Grrrr, this function needs to go! |

Least that's a polite way of saying , so not really interested. Good excuse to go. |

I agree with the option to hiding last online and if your online.
if you can set to being active or invisible that would be great.
last logged in within the last 24 hrs, week, 2 weeks, month etc or inactive for over 2 months would be a good solution |

Because you're doing other things and want to be left alone. |

Then just say that , you realise some people have limited messages and without this feature they could end up wasting them on people that haven't been on for weeks or months .
If the guy starts annoying you there is always the block option |

People have a right to privacy, and to manage that privacy in a way that suits them, making things easy for other people on the site isn't their concern |

Sometimes I want to come online and look at pictures, not be hassled. It shouldn't be too much to ask.
And saying I'll talk to you later doesn't work in my experience. They got a message from you so they want your undivided attention! And yes, I can block, but being left in peace would be good too. |

I understand where you coming from but then instead of an on and off choice why not add a "away" option that would give you the privacy and at same time avoid people waste time try to message "dead profiles" |

Lying doesn't solve it, just creates mistrust. If I felt she was lying then it would just mean she's not interested and I'd be switched off from further chat or meeting. |

Any option that allowed me to look in peace, temporarily, would be fine by me. I don't want to look offline all the time. I just don't want to appear online all the time that I am. |

This would be great if we could hide online when we wanted to. Dometines when I log in I just get pounced on. If I forget to log out I'm accused of being rude by not replying lol. Can't win! |

This happens to me a lot. I want to look at the forums for a while so I say goodbye or goodnight..as in end of conversation, but I still want to be on forums for a bit longer.
Like, if I bumped into a friend in a shop, we chatted for a few minutes then said goodbye, I wouldn't expect them to have a go at me about still being in the shop if we ended up at the same till later on. ![](/icons/s/confused.gif) |

Yeah. The thing I'm complaining about is I say goodbye to a friend in the fruit aisle because I still need milk, and they get upset with me because I spent time in the shop that wasn't talking to them. We're unfortunately not going to get rid of the weird entitlement, but I'd like a trench coat and big glasses please. |

I can understand the rationale, but by removing the option for others to know when you are online you could be making matters more problematic down the line.
Stick with me on this.
Currently you are chatting to a guy/gal/couple.
You think they seem OK. Not necessarily a fuck me now but you get on good banter and so hey maybe one for the future. You say goodbye / goodnight.
Then they start the weird stalker messages not getting the point as they see you are online still.
Weird, annoying yes. But bullet dodged. They are going off the possible list, to the 'no not ever don't need that stalker' list.
Now if you have the feature which means they don't know when you were last online. You would leave your conversations without any idea that this person has tendencies to be a bit clingy/stalker, you think they are still good banter. Then you exchange more personal details or meet and it's much harder to shake them once their true personality is revealed.
Long term the removal of that feature would only help those who have stalkerish/clingy personalities. |

They themselves out in other ways.
Not appearing online would also eliminate the 4am "I'll just look at pictures while getting a glass of water" rush of desperate demanding diabolical messages. |
