We agree the templates for this web-site are now dated, though it's sizing format is reasonable for mobile use, it isn't even truly functional if say compared to (AFF)?
However React is "JAVA heavy" and some browsers really don't like that? |

"Wrong, react is a library which allow you to use javascript vanilla (not java) more easily and javascript is native from browser and it will work extremely fast."
On paper yes but yours is a simplistic answer? ALL the popular browsers DO have occasional issues with Java in that it has to be written/used uniquely for each and that causes, from time to time, cross-browser problems?
We all know that browsers, IE and Chrome particularly, really hate permitting "third party executable software" intimate access within their own software and so it's up against it to get off the starting blocks. React does use "safe libraries" and should be seamless . . if used correctly and there are many examples out there that the "end user" has not used it entirely correctly.
Java, like Flash, has been a stalwart for users BUT both are considered overdue for replacement. Flash has already fallen - though still heavily in use - and maybe soon Java will go the same way? So you have to ask yourself if you're constructing a huge project . . do you want to build it around something that may be "outlawed" by popular browsers in the near future? |

Then there's the security issues, risk of hacking. And do we want a heavy site that struggles to run on older mobiles ?. The current site has obvious issues but at least it's fast (when the server behaves) and uses minimal data allowance. |

Change for changes sake?
Or a benefit?
I don't mind the layout of the site, it's quick and clean.
Some features (or rather, the lack there of) frustrate the crap out of me.
But the site speed and accessibility is bang on.
There are other swinging sites that might look pretties, but they sure as hell lack the substance.
IMHO.

I work in this industry, i can see what you're saying and no there is no harm in creating a wrapper app that can disply and be "responsive" which is what i think you meant by react? Though another poster pointed out react is also a js library.
I like the idea of an application but I also know the site uses fuck all in data. Everything I've used, no matter the phone, the site has always worked better than a lot of others. The functionality, logic and flow of the site work extremely well outside of the forum. I haven't used it enough to comment on that front, though the rest of the site runs very smooth.
Personally, I would rather use a site than an app for this type of interaction: mostly for the following device memory, no permission granting (this app needs access to your contacts.... Why though).
Or do you mean a spruce up to the UI give it a more modern feel but not actually mess with the code? |

I like it for this reason also. |

It's some of the functionality of this web-site that could do with improving and not it's format? As has been posted above it's very lean on "mechanics" and that does help . . when was the last time you failed to sign into the site? See?
It's neither "rocket science" nor a heavy demand upon servers to make the messaging system much, much better . . would somebody PLEASE look at that? |

Personally, the site could do with a UI redesign to give it a more modern appearance.
I've been using Ionic lately, which works well. And allows a site to be wrapped up as an installable web app.
Not familiar with React. |
